There's been quite a lot of talk about how season 5 mirrors, parralels or even 'pairs up' with season 2 in a sense, and that the show is essentially folding back on itself, with season 3 and 4 being linked with getting off the island, oceanic 6 and jacks down fall. Some may look even further into this and anticipate season 6 to parrarlel season 1, with a lot of the intial and fundemental mysteries, namely the others, being revealed.
With this said, I now firmly believe this seasons finale will mirror season 2's in a key way with Jacks story. He's now a man of faith, with a supposed new purpose, lest we forget out rightly being compared to Locke on numerous occasions now. He believes he can 'erase' everything that has happened to them.
One thing this show keeps reiterating, is whatever happened, happened. Daniel's 1977 story arc throughout The Variable consisted of him thinking he had found the way to change the timeline then ending up dying in the grander scheme of things, as this has always happened, Daniel always came up with and thought The Variable would work, and he's always died on the eve of his plans, and Jack always tried to follow through on his plans, and ultimately, I believe, Jack always fails. By doing so, he essentially creates his own destiny as he intends, but still keeping in line with whatever happened, happened- by trying to change or prevent an event you are in hand causing it (see Sayid/Young Ben).
Lets look back to Jack again, a man with a sole purpose, a sole destructive purpose, and I'm going to come outright and say it here- imagine the poetic justice of Jack sitting practically in the same place and circumstance as Locke was in Season 2. Both men with a purpose, hellbent on seeing their plans through without outside interference, so sure they're right but just as Locke was crying admist all the chaos in the hatch after he failed, Jack will be too. I think this will be the red underlinging to all the WHH instances this season to compeletely send message home. Through some turn of events Jack will fail and the energy/bomb will be contained, but perhaps just as if not more catostrophic than the hatch explosion. Jack will realise he has sealed his own fate, and fall into despair much like Locke. Maybe over stepping the line a bit, but going deeper, who could be his Ecko, to try and help him out, but ultimately die as a result of it, ahem Sawyer? Haha, just throwing th! at one out there...
Cheers for reading.
