Adding on to MadSaxBlaster's theory... thanks for the help big guy
Locke invented Jacob. When he went to the Hostile's camp in 1954, to Richard he was doing nothing more than screaming insanity. It is when he said Jacob sent him that Jacob was born. Before then the deity was nonexistent. From that point on Jacob developed merely as a figment of everyone's imagination. John is the only one we can say for sure heard him, and this is because hey is the creator of this false being. The others reveled over this man that a crazy guy from the future seemed to revere, and Jacob's presence grew. Is God real? (sorry for getting into a whole mess of a new argument here) If people believe in him then. People believe in Jacob, and there for his palpable existence augmented over time.
In order to kill Jacob, Locke must kill himself. This is not to say a simple identity match that Locke is Jacob. But if Locke is able to kill one of his alternate selves, and keep himself every from telling Richard about Jacob, Jacob in essence never exists. That's how Locke will kill Jacob.
I know there are wholes in this like how will Locke get back to 1954 and so on, but just thought it was an interesting idea to think about.
