Whatever happened to Vincent the dog?
Here are several small tidbits of information that I happened across this morning while searching Lost spoiler sites trying to find out what happened to the island’s lovable canine.
Separately, these tidbits of info do not really seem significant, however when put together in this sequence, they seems to point towards something, possibly hinting at how the series will end.
Vincent was last seen fleeing the flaming arrow attack on the beach after the Losties time jumped to 1954.
Later, a future Locke found what seemed to be Vincent's collar on the beach indicating that Vincent may have perished in 1954 during the arrow attack.
Quote from wikipedia entry about Vincent:
"Vincent was on the beach when Bernard attempted to make a fire, after a flash of light brought the survivors to 1954. When the flaming arrows started to fly out of the darkness, Vincent was seen running away. ("The Lie") Vincent's collar was later found at a ravaged beach camp in the future by Locke after one of the time flashes. His current whereabouts are unknown. ("The Little Prince")"
Was it the end of our furry little friend?
"Damon Lindelof confirmed in the February 4, 2009 episode of the Official Lost Podcast that Vincent will survive through the end of Season 6, making Vincent the first and so far only character that has been confirmed will survive the entirety of the series. (Official Lost Podcast transcript/February 5th, 2009)"
In season 1 it was revealed by one of the writers in a podcast that there is a clue in the opening sequence of the pilot episode (Jack waking up in the jungle after the crash) that supposedly relates to the shows ending. Over the past 4 seasons, people have combed that sequence over and over, and have speculated on message boards about how that first sequence would tie in with the finale… jack waking up on the island again, or that he was cryogenically frozen… etc., etc.,
However, I think almost everyone has overlooked the fact that Vincent was also in the opening scene along with jack.
Lostopedia.com states this trivia fact about Vincent:
"Vincent is the second character introduced in "Pilot, Part 1", after Jack."
But was Vincent really the 2nd character introduced?
ABC.com used to post 2 minute excepts of each episode that were not broadcast on TV. These are called “The missing pieces”. The 13th of these short clips was called “So it begins”. Here is the synopsis of this brief clip:
"Timeline: Just right after the crash. Vincent, the dog, sees Jack’s father who instructs him to wake up Jack because there are things that must be done. And thne next scene would have to be the very first one of Lost, with Vincent licking Jack’s face."
You can watch this 2 minute missing piece here:

From a story telling perspective, the entire series started with Jack and Vincent, however as we see with this missing piece, Vincent is indeed the very first character we are introduced to.
I then read this from http://spoilerslost.blogspot.com/:
"HOW IT ENDS: Just as an insight into Damon' Lindelof’s mind (and thus a pointer to possible plans for the Lost series ender), you might be interested to know that the M*A*S*H finale is Damon's all-time favorite series conclusion."
This is the final scene in MASH:

Naveen Andrews has his own idea of how the entire series will wrap up:
"Naveen Andrews, who portrays Sayid Jarrah, has a theory that the series finale will feature the rescue boats coming to rescue Vincent while the graves of all the survivors are seen behind him."
This of course would validate what the writers have said in the season 1 podcast. That something in that first scene, (Vincent) was a clue to how it will all end.
If that's the case... the secret of what happened to everyone would remain a mystery held by only by a dog who cannot speak.
