Jacob and his Nemesis.
One is light... one is dark. But, neither are good... nor are they evil. Their only real difference is their perspective on the human race.
One believes that all sinners should be 'judged' and punnished accordingly... while the other believes that maybe things aren't that simple; that even good people do bad things, and everything in between is simply 'progress'.
I think it's clear the show is honing in on these two opposing ideologies which are now represented by these two fascinating characters: Jacob and his un-named Nemesis.
If there is indeed somekind of a game being played, orriginally theorized to be between Ben and Widmore, I believe we can safetly assume that the game is actually between Jacob and his Nemesis, and all our characters; Ben, Widmore, and even Richard, are simply the pieces of the game. And the Island is the board.
What still remains a mystery, are the 'rules' of the game. It would seem to me, that neither of the players can physically or directly 'move' the pieces themselves, but the pieces can be manipulated to do so.
In my eyes there seems to be almost a pattern to how the two players are playing the game going off what we saw in the finale. The Nemesis, who I believe to be Smokie, seems to have a very direct approach, in that he will wait for the pieces(characters) to arrive to the board(island) first and then use the dead to manipulate them and judge them, but only killing them if he doesn't believe they will be of use i.e. help him win the game.
Jacob, on the other hand, seems to be much more subtle in the way he plays. More indirect. Unbias. Jacob's method is to 'prepare' his pieces BEFORE they actually arrive to the board. And I don't believe he uses any form of manipulation. He simply reminds his pieces that they have a choice. Free will.
And so this 'game' is played over and over again but always seems to result the same; that we come... we fight... we destroy... we corrupt. But each loss is progress and eventually we will have the capacity to see the error of our ways.
These are all the 'larger ideas' of the show and you can spend hours debating them. But what is actually going on?
Here are just some of my thoughts:
Jacob and his Nemesis are demi-Gods, or sub Gods. However, Jacob lives in physical form. He is flesh and blood, and can be killed. The Nemesis, or Smokie on the other hand is not physical... is not flesh and blood. Which is why he cannot simply kill Jacob himself. That's one reason, but maybe one God cannot kill another God has something to do with it.
One of the big questions for me is how can there be two physical, flesh and blood John Locke's on the island? My first though was it had something to do with time shifting causing some sort of duplication. But I don't buy that. The only other explanation in my eyes is that the fake Locke is merely an apparition of Smokie, just like Christian... like Alex and all the rest of them. But how can fake Locke; 'FLocke' be an apparition when he shook hands with Richard?
Well, we saw Fake Alex shove Ben up against a wall. It's the same principal. I believe Smokie as an apparition can physically interact with you, but cannot cause any physical change as that apparition. I.e. he can't kill you. Which is why FLocke cannot kill Jacob himself and needs Ben to do it.
Did Ilana know of the contents of the box before FLocke showed up? If so, why the hell would she allow him to walk away? My conclusion is that she being friend to Jacob is aware of his nemesis and the game between them that is being played. Alot of us got the sense that maybe it was Jacob's plan to die all along, and Ilana is helping. Maybe this is Jacob's long con; his grand mainupulation of the Nemesis. It would be fitting that if Jacob is going to win the game he will doing so by using the Nemesis' own devices of manipulation against him.
Regarding the Bomb and Juliet and the Losties... I am completely 'Lost'. Did the bomb go off, didn't it? Are they all dead, are they not? Did the island move? Did it skip through time? I have no idea at all! This was definately the least concluding series finale since the opening of the hatch. It is almost in possible to speculate on where things can go from here. I am confident however, that the pre-credit opening scene of season six will give us everything we need to form an idea of where the show is going.
That's it from me. Not much of a theory I know. Just some general thoughts.
