First of all, let me say that I have always been a very, very firm believer in “whatever happened, happened.” This theory does not VIOLATE this rule, but is in fact, that exception that PROVES the rule. More than a strong theory, it is merely an idea of what direction the show MIGHT go. I guess we’ll know by tomorrow.
Anyway, as I said, I believe firmly in the idea that “whatever happened, happened.” But one also has to consider what we were presented with in the variable:
1: Eloise Hawking, someone who has been guiding the characters since 1977, when she shot her own son, no longer has any idea what is happening, or what might happen next. She is now as “lost” as everyone else on the show. Obviously, something is not going the way she thought it would.
2: Daniel Faraday, the man that originally presented us with the idea that “whatever happened, happened” has now become the poster-boy for changing the past.
So what if the RULE of the universe is that “whatever happened happened,” but Daniel was somehow able to find an exception to that rule? (i.e. the Variable.)
Let me backtrack a little. Stay with me here. This theory, and any other one like it, could bring up the question of whether or not the Oceanic Six have ALWAYS been in the 1970s, or if this “loop” –if you imagine time as a circle; think back to the future and you’ll get the loop thing – is something new. Well, as Richard pointed out, he does indeed remember seeing the Losties there. So I am going to go with the idea that Jack and his crew have always gone back the 70s. (i.e. whatever happened, happened.)
But then again, Richard says that he saw them all die. So maybe this time around, Daniel WAS able to change something. (Maybe that is why his mother spent the rest of her life getting him back to that point, so MAYBE, in some loop, things could be changed.) This means Jack will now be able to change something. I think that this loop represents a break in the circle – any Stephen King’s Dark Tower fans can probably understand this – and something that happens in this loop will break that chain forever, thereby changing the past. As I said earlier, this is not the rule; the past is not MEANT to be able to be broken. But Daniel found a variable in the rule; he FOUND a way to change things.
So what does this mean for the final season of Lost. This is where – if this theory turns out to be correct – I think the show will go:
1: Jack will change the past, and will stop the incident from happening. This means that:
2: Flight 815 will never crash, and the people on it will land safely in LA. Also, Desmond will have never been stuck in the hatch, pressing the button for so many years, because there won’t be a button to press. (Really, this doesn’t stop Desmond from actually GOING to the island, as Widmore sent him there. But it wouldn’t be TOO farfetched to believe that Widmore sent him there because he knew he has a purpose there. I mean, he sent Daniel to the island for the same reason…) This, in turn, means:
3: The Dharma Initiative is still present on the island. The Incident seems to be the turning point, where the DI loses it. Well maybe they don’t lose it, and maybe the Others lose their chance for a Purge. The Losties will be in the real world, and will have never come to the island. Juliet may also be in the real world, as the Others, in theory, never took control.
4: Now where does this leave the course of the season? I believe Desmond, as we have seen hints of before, is “special.” This is the reason he never made it back to the island this season: he has to be off the island; which will be part of the reason that he is unaffected by the change in things. (More would be explained about that fact by the writers. They have done stranger things with less explanation.)
5: So this means that Desmond will be the one to bring the Losties back to the island, where their destiny still remains. Perhaps their job is to stop the Dharma Initiative? It’s hard to say. Now will this mean we can see other Lost characters who have been killed off in the past? Probably not. I think the island will “call back” those who it needs back, and chances are, the ones it needs back are the ones who were alive when things changed. So those who aren’t alive simply won’t feel the call. (Won’t stop a cameo or two though.)
6: So the sixth season, if this is correct, will be about the Dharma Initiative still being on the island, and the Losties, (all without memory – or maybe just eerie hazes of memory - of what happened) being led by Desmond to get back and fulfill their destinies.
Side note: I have been convinced that Ilana and her people were sent to the island by a third party to reestablish the Dharma Initiative. This leaves just about not room for them. As I said earlier, it’s just a theory. It didn’t take very long to type, so if you don’t agree with it, my life is not going to be ruined. As always, the season finale will probably prove everyone’s theories completely wrong. But this one at least has some educated guesses behind it. We’ll just have to see.
