With the opening of the season finale, we have a pretty good idea about how the season will end. The two (Jacob and ??) sitting on the beach watching the incoming participants arrive.
Second, I think Jack is now Jacob and Jack is truly dead. This makes the replay of the season one much more interesting because just like ?? was acting as the old Locke, Jacob will be using Jack's body to do his secret manipulation.
On a final note, I don't believe we can fully trust Jacob.
1. Gives the pen to Sawyer to write his, 'I will get even letter'
2. Allows Kate to be spared punishment of a crime she committed.
3. Disrupts Jacks train of thought about his dad who he knew was right, and mentions something to make it turn around that his dad was just being a jerk.
4. Hurley, is given the "You are so special" line that we have heard before. I feel that this was emotional manipulation because he knew that is all he needed to do.
5. Sun/Jin nothing comes to mind.
6. Allows Sayid's wife to die.
This is not to say that Jacob is good or evil but rather just playing with the chess pieces.
