This is based on my first thoughts when Daniel first called Desmond special. Nearly everyone on these boards seem to think Desmond is "special" and an exception to the rule (meaning he is the only person who has the ability to change the future) because of what Daniel said when he knocked on the hatch door. I do not believe Desmond is an exception to anything and instead believe Desmond was only uniquely qualified to relay information from the past on-island to the present off-island. What makes him uniquely qualified? He was the only person who left the island with the 06 who was also on the island in the past, in the time period that Daniel & Co.(the left-behinders) time travled to. Therefore he was the only person who could receive information on-island at that time and remember it in the present off-island in order to contact Daniel's mother. To me, this is the most logical explanation and what Daniel mea! nt when he called Desmond "special."
