These are just some thoughts about these particular characters who didn't have much roles in the finale.
Though this isn't Desmond's purpose, he is still the only character off the island. And though i was disappointed he was rarely seen this season, at least for the first part of season 6, perhaps he will have to get other characters still off the island back. Aaron? Ji Yeon? Walt? These young characters all seem to have some bigger connection to the island, especially Aaron and Walt. Im thinking he'll go back via the way the Others normally come and go, helped by Eloise Hawking amd Widmore may jump on board as well.
Charles Widmore also has a big role still to play. He seems to have some knowledge of the "War that is coming", which seems to be between Jacob & his enemy. Maybe he is working with Jacob's enemy? He said Locke had to be back on the island...maybe so the Enemy can "inhabit" him? Perhaps he's struck a deal as he sinisterly claimed the island "will be his again"...
I've also read some theories about Christian as well. It doesn't feel right to me that he was only used by the Enemy to manipulate Locke, but the fact he appeared to Jack, off the island doesn't feel "Jacob's Enemy" like, nor does taking Claire with him (which i think was to protect her from the time shifts and all that went down in Season 5). Before he died, he's played roles in Jack's, Ana-Lucia's and Sawyer's lives. I think there's more to come from him, and him as an individual, not inhabited by anyone else.
