After a bit of thinking after Follow The Leader (05x15), I think that it could be quite possible that Daniel Faraday becomes Jacob. Now, we all saw him getting shot in the last episode, but couple episodes back we also saw that the Others can magically heal seriously wounded persons. I think that it is safe to assume it could be possible that the temple (or whatever they are using to heal people) could, at least to some extent also resurrect dead people (not back into a normal, living person, but into something ghost-like, or Jacob-like).
For the 1970's Others Faraday must seem like a genious, with all the information he has in his notebook, and in his head. Plus they think that he is from the future. A person (or, ghost, as he'd most likely be after the "resurrection") like this could, with help from the right people, such as Alpert, Widmore and Hawking end up getting a god-like status amongst his people, just like Jacob seems to have.
And when it comes to Jacob's cabin, I believe it was confirmed in season 4 that it was built by Horace Goodspeed, for himself and his wife. Now, so far we have seen Horace living happily in the Dharmaville, with no reason to move out into the woods. Until the 15th episode of season 5, where Radzinsky declared himself as the leader of Dharmaville. This would give Horace the reason to build the cabin, and it would be around the same time as Faradays transformation into Jacob.
The leaders of Others, amazed and quite possibly frightened by Faradays knowledge, most likely wouldn't want him to be just chilling around their people, feeding them revolutionary information about the internet and jet-engines. Therefore they'd need a place to keep Faraday in, and what would be better than a freshly built cabin in middle of the woods? After getting all the possible information out of him, or finding him useless for some other reason, or finding him a threat, they would end up trapping him into his own cabin with the ashlike magic powder which we saw in earlier seasons.
Jacob being someone who has travelled back in time would also explain why Eloise Hawking was able to "see" things before they happened, not because she actually saw them, but because Daniel had told her what would happen. It'd also explain why she suddenly lost her ability in 05x15, it was around the same time that Daniel died and therefore couldn't have any new information about events happening after his death.
I know there are some holes in the theory, such as Jacob being called Jacob instead of Daniel, or Richard recognizing Jacob's name in the 1950s. The simplest explanation I can think of, is that even before Faraday, they used to have some ancient myth about some strange fellow called Jacob, and when Faraday showed up and became the crazy god- and ghost-like genius, the leaders just decided to pass him off as Jacob, from their ancient myth (increasing his status in people's eyes even more, and helping themselves by avoiding the need to explain how the whole "crazy man from the future" -scenario is even possible). Kind of like Christians could pass some strange fellow off as a newborn Jesus (Not meant to offend anyone, just to give an idea of what I'm trying to explain here :)
I know that I most likely missed something, but I hope to see your comments! (And I'd like to apologize for all the spelling errors, I only speak english as second language.)
