Richard is almost definitely a passenger on the Black Rock, either as first mate (advisory role) or maybe the “special cargo” from Jacob’s Egyptian days. Otherwise, we probably would have seen him in the Jacob-eating-fish scene.
Jacob’s unnamed friend is Apep/Apophis, the Egyptian demon that was married to Tawaret (goddess of fertility). I think that this guy is really an apparition of smokey similar to those we’ve seen with Eko’s brother Yemi, Alex in the temple, and Christian in Jacob’s cabin.
Follow-up questions:
• Does this mean Claire is dead/bad, too since she was with Christian in the cabin?
• Has smokey been manipulating Locke all along as “the voice of the island” because of his plan to inhabit his body and come back as the “leader” to kill Jacob? Remember when he got dragged down into that hole? Maybe it started then.
• When Jacob visited Locke, was it knowing how it would end? Was Locke’s sacrifice necessary for the island’s course of events in the coming war?
Jacob’s comment that “there’s only one end- everything before that is just progress.”- I think that Jacob has a knowledge of the island events, the ability to manipulate the “special” properties of the island, and obviously leave and return whenever he wishes.
• Does his existence as a “god” permit this?
• Is really just an ancient figure protected by some magic?
• Did he say “help me” to Locke in the cabin, or was that some other stranger (smokey) continuing the manipulation?
If my theory of smokey/apophis/jacob’s-unnamed-friend is correct, this would explain how when Hurley sees dead people, he’s not “crazy” as confirmed by Jacob, as long as smokey can also apparate off-island. There has been much online speculation about Hurley being the “magic variable” to the equation because of how he almost missed the plane, the numbers, etc. We’ll see if this comes to pass- I’ll bite for now.
Now to 1977-
The Incident:
Was Miles correct that the H-bomb was the incident? Or was the incident simply the electromagnetic pull of the entire construction site down into the hole?
I think the “incident” was the latter, and the H-bomb will change things. Many people had spoiler comments saying things like, “I don’t even know how they can do the same show after this,” indicating that there are either some serious major deaths or plot twists that change the dynamic entirely. The knowledge we have could have these outcomes:
1. The H-bomb killed everyone in the present 1977, and they only exist as their younger selves in their childhoods to float down the river of time until they board/safely depart flight 815 as adults not knowing each other and never landing on the island.
2. The H-bomb was the incident, and on-island life continues for the 815’rs and for Chang to make his orientation films, warn about the incident, and for the continuation of the Swan construction/Radinsky’s suicide/Kelvin & Desmond’s button-pushing to occur, all leading to a repeat of the existing events, confirming Jacob’s statement that there is just one end.
I think the first option will likely be what the show turns to, because the producers and writers have continually emphasized character development as a priority on this show. Seeing how they could possibly have remnant memories of their island time, like Desmond’s dream of Farraday, and how this could change their flight interactions/unknown connections to each other would be an interesting twist to the show ending up happily ever after. Is it possible for Jack to still remember/love Kate although they haven’t had the on-island and off-island interactions? Would all the other connecting characters and their connections to the Lostie’s like Kelvin (Sayid’s interrogator/Desmond’s button-pushing pal/Kate’s dad’s army bud), Christian (Sawyer in the bar / Claire’s dad / Jack’s dad) come to light?
If the 2nd option is true, we’ll know that Farraday’s supposition that “whatever happened, happened,” whether variables exist or not, is proven true.
Speaking of Desmond, I think Eloise was correct in stating that the island wasn’t through with him. If he were to return in current island time, he might play a pivotal role in the approaching “war”, and Widmore might have something to do with him finding his way back. I hope that in the end he’s the saving grace, but it seems like it’ll take a while for that to happen at this point.
Finally, when the hell are we going to learn about the DeGroot’s and Alvar Hanso?! In a season full of Dharma, you’d think that would be addressed! I guess they’re just working with the time they have.
Even though the show would be much less enjoyable if this were to happen, I kind of wish they would just throw out connections, answers, and solve mysteries left and right for the last season. It could really take away from the storytelling narrative, but I’m so invested in the mythology at this point (obviously ) that it’s what I secretly desire.
I’d love to hear any of your thoughts/commentary on the ideas above. It’s always nice to have my theories debunked by details I’ve neglected or logical fallacies based on the facts we have.
In the meantime, hope you all don’t engage in too much soul-eating on the 8-month hiatus between seasons.
.... Yes this is a LONG theory and not just a question
