This is the mural in the hatch.[/b] I wanted to analyze it for clues to support my mythological theory that the [b]Egyptian God of Death and the Underworld (Anubis, Osiris) is the Smoke Monster[/b], who came to the island on the [b]Black Rock[/b] looking for a gateway into paradise. [b]Jacob is the gatekeeper[/b] to J[b]acobs Ladder[/b], a stairway to heaven, or portal. (Book of Genesis).
Here goes:
It looks like a child's drawing.
It looks like a scary dream.
There is a Child being chased or frightened by a Scary, dark person behind her.
Scary Man has one black eye, and one white eye.
He has a red slash on his head through his right eye from the forehead to the cheek.
He has no hair.
He has an open mouth with big lips and straight teeth.
Scary Man looks like he is wearing a priest's collar.
The night sky has a crescent moon and stars.
There are large jagged blue waves of water.
Fish are in and under the water waves.
The Child is on an Island with other people, stick figures one the top left.
One stick figure appears to be a white faced man walking on a wave of water.
Some sort of Underworld is indicated beneath the island.
The Sun is is located beneath the water wave line, in the Underworld.
The Sun has the number 108 on its face.
There is a boat with a large sail.
The Boat has some kind of Vortex/Snake/Light Tube is coming out of the a large hole in the front of the boat.
The Vortex has swirly long body with a yellow cluster in the center, and what looks like a long snout and one eye.
The Up Arrow has horizontal lines on it that make it look like a Ladder or a Rocket.
A person encapsulated in Yellow in is trying to climb up the Arrow/Ladder/Rocket.
The Snake/Vortex/Light Tube is chasing after the Up Arrow/Ladder/Rocket.
People are falling out of the ship into the water (dead sailors, storm, tsunami?)
The Up Arrow is aimed away from the underworld up towards the water waves and the sun, and perhaps towards the stick figure white faced man walking on the water wave.
There is a cabin near the Up Arrow, a Cabin near the Vortex, and near the big numbers. All 3 of them are in the underworld.
In between the man and the child, there is a symbol of Ra (Circle with inner dot), the number 42, a Cabin and a Fish.
The 42 and the Cabin seem to be pointing towards the Ra Symbol, forming a triangle.
The number 108 is also on the wall of the underworld, together with another number that looks like half of a 3. (I first thought this number was 316 as the 8 is hidden behind the sun.)
My interpretation:
I think these clues tie directly into the Egyptian God/Jacob's Lader theory, lock stock and barrel.
But, I think there is still something missing. None of this background covers the fertility/children themes that run through the story. What about the children? What is the problem? What was the infection? What started the problem with the pregnancies?
I read another theory that proposed that the monster(s) on the island are a result of the children's nightmares or wishes. Remember Ben's Black Box?
Well, if the children born on the island are gifted (Miles and Daniel) then what if a child could develop the ability to project their fears, frustrations, or nightmares into their own reality. This is what Walt does. He was mad at his mom and dad, and a bird smashed into the window. Later, he is held at the medical facility, and a pile of dead birds showed up outside of this window. His mother probably got cancer because he was mad at her for not paying enough attention to him, focused on her husband and job. A child can wish for all sorts of unreasonable things, or dream about really crazy stuff.
In the Dharma school house, the chalkboard shows that they teach the kids egyptology, even heiroglypics. The kids live on this scary island with a wierd ghost ship with a hole in it, and wierd people show up in their lives (like time traveling plane wreck surviors). Their parents talk about saving the world and that their work is all about preventing the inevetable destruction of mankind.
This mural looks like a kid's nightmare. A ship is blown onto the island, carying slaves and egyptian cargo. The egyptian cargo, Osiris, God of the Dead, Anubis, the Undertaker, suddenly turns into a smoke monster from the underworld , looking for a portal to heaven.
What if a child born on the island, exposed to all of these scary things while studying Egyptology in scool and Genesis in Sunday School dreamt all the mosters up?
The island kids have special gifts, thanks to the special EM forces of the island. Perhaps some of the more powerful ones can psychicaly project their fears into reality. They basically dream up these monsters. The monsters, the time travel, the plane wreck all happens, but it happens because the kids dreamt the monsters up?
This could be the sickness--a psychic sickness of the kids that put the entire island, even the world, in danger.
Honestly, I think this sounds like I have been tripping on some strange drugs, but it ties into a lot of the stuff the writers talk about in some of their official statements about the show. In particular, they reference the movie, The Forbidden Planet all of the time. This is a HUGE influence on the show, mentioned all over the place and even featured in the Lost video game with it's own website. The Forbidden Planet is about Robby the Robot, servant to humans on the planet SomethingOrOther, who can make whatever you dream up into reality--even your worst fears. Robby the Robot can make you a dress made of diamonds and emeralds, but it can also take care of that nasty dream you had last night, or that flash of anger that you felt when your daddy told you to straighten up.
So, basically, my Egyptian/Biblical theory is the mythos--the basis to a child'd dream. She dreamt up these monsters, who were made very real, who then created a time warp, made a plane crash, and the rest is...well...Season 6!
