Alright... I might be on to something here.
Jacob spoke to little Kate and and made her promise she would never steal again, as we all know Kate was a fugitive, and possibly did steal...quite a bit... again. Jacob also gave Sawyer a pen to finish his letter that he promised the man at the funeral he wouldn't finish. We know he did finish it... He also told Jin and Sun never to take their love for granted. Sun had an affair, Jin was quite a jerk when we first met them, so obviously something led them astray.
Alright, point being, their "promises" were at some point broken... Maybe when season 6 begins, we will come to find that Jacob visited other Losties at some point and they made promises as well. In all of these situations, maybe we will find out that there was someone else present (the man at the funeral) that tempted them into breaking their promises... much like the Garden of Eden story. Perhaps this man turned out to be the man Jacob is speaking with at the beginning of the incident?
i know it's not a rock solid theory but with 9 months to go until we get some answers, I'm just trying to stir up some conversation. Feel free to comment/add/correct as you will!
