This theory attempts to explain why Jacob's cabin has the apparent ability to move and why Hurley knows how to find it. I will also explain why the movement of the cabin was Ben's absolute proof that he was no longer leader of the Others.
Pardon my citing one of the most exhaustively referenced scenes of the whole series, but it's essential to my point: As Miss Hawking explained to Desmond, the man in the red shoes had to die. But she admitted that the cause of death could change. Desmond put this concept into practice with Charlie. Even though Charlie's death was certain, his cause of death could be changed.
The reason I make this reference is because this concept explains why the location of Jacob's cabin changed. Jacob's cabin had to be built, that was inevitable. But the location of the cabin could change. It could be built 5 kilometers from the Swan, it could be built 4 miles from the Orchid, just so long as it was built. And considering the apparent importance of Jacob, I doubt the location of the cabin is just an incidental side effect of causal variances. I believe there was specific importance to the cabin's sudden location change. Enter Hurley.
Now I typically don't like stacking theories on top of other theories. The result comes off as mere speculation. But I can't discuss the cabin without addressing Hurley's involvement.
I'm sure we've all found it quite curious that Hurley was able to locate the cabin while the ever-so-important John Locke could not. Even Ben claimed to be following Hurley as the three men trekked through the woods looking for the cabin, an odd turn of events considering Ben recently led Locke to the cabin personally.
My theory is that Hurley's purpose, Hurley's reason for flashing into 1977, was to dwell in the cabin as sanctuary from the purge. I'm NOT saying I believe Hurley is Jacob. I'm stating that Hurley's purpose was to act as a link between Jacob and Locke, as a bridge between the past and the present. Someone needed to lead Locke to the cabin. Hurley's job was to be a part of the cabin so his future self could lead Locke there. So that no matter where the cabin was built, Hurley could help Locke find it. This leads to the question of why Ben could no longer find the cabin. Why couldn't Ben be that link between Locke and Jacob?
The reason Ben could no longer find the cabin wasn't because Jacob was mad at Ben or disappointed with him and therefore hid his cabin so Ben couldn't find it. Ben lost the cabin because something in the past changed that resulted in the cabin being built in a different location. The location of the cabin was a secret known only to the leader. Since Ben no longer knew the cabin's location, that means when it was built in the past, Ben was not in on that secret. In other words, Ben's loss of the cabin's location means he was left out of the loop in the past when it was built and therefore can’t be the leader. Theory by timeisrelative
