This is my first theory based on a theory posted by Tsar Bomba so here goes.
The rope left sticking out of the ground left by Sawyer after lowering Locke down the well and flashing to ancient times and then to 1970 in S05E08.
This was found by an Egyptian Priest in the shadow of the statue and dug up to find the hidden properties beneath which was then used to enhance his stature within the community, becoming their leader, building a temple till he was killed or murdered and the island resurecting him as Richard Alpert.
So as to not let anyone make the mistakes he made he sets out to find the one true leader incorperating a security system (as told by Dannielles boyfriend before being killed by her) smokey, in the temple who becomes the judge,jury and executioner.
It is Richard that manifests himself as different people to test possible candidates as he states in the Hbomb episode that they have a very strict process of choosing their leader.
Its when Ellie and Widmore start to question the authority of Richard that things go wrong, between them they have found a way to manipulate the island and Jacob (who i think is some sort of embodiment of Richard from ancient times) and puts everything into effect Widmore being banished to finding a way back to ben pushing the FDW.
So as Tsar Bumba puts it "it all starts with the rope in the ground"
