There may (i.e. probably are) some holes in this but here goes. Take this as brainstorming if nothing else.
I think the monster is advanced technology from the island's future. It is a real "security system" but it hasn't been invented yet. It somehow was sent back in time - waaay back to the time of the Egyptians. The original island inhabitants built a temple to it, thinking it came from the gods, when in fact it was future tech.
"Sounds a little too 'Terminator'," you might say. But the monster was not sent back to kill anyone. No, the monster was sent back to gather information. We know it can "read" people. It seems sometimes to analyze and take pictures. It is smart and can mimic human intelligence. I think that future persons, just like the Dharma initiative, are interested in the island's origins, so they sent the monster back to learn what it could. The monster did. The monster's mission is complete.
The problem is that the monster can't get back to the future. For whatever reason, something went wrong. So the monster has been on the island, waiting all this time. Until John Locke comes along. The monster, in the guise of Christian Shepard (why Christian? That I don't know, sorry), gets Locke to turn the wheel, hoping that it will be sent back to the future. Unfortunately, that doesn't work.
The reason is similar to why the Oceanic 6 had to mimic the original conditions of their airline crash when they returned to the island. The island has to be restored to a state like it is in the future, in order for the monster to be able to get back. That is why the monster keeps killing people off who aren't supposed to be there - and why Ben couldn't use the monster to purge Dharma, but had to use gas instead. If Dharma is in the future, the monster doesn't need to kill them. But Rousseau's team, Keamy's men, the pilot, Mr. Eko - they have no parallel in the future, so they must go.
I know this theory has holes, but maybe it can be a springboard for other ideas. Let me know what you think. Theory by Turambar
