So, while my wife and I were watching Dead is Dead, we were both really blown away by the whole scene under the temple, as most were, I'm sure. After it finished, she asked me to rewind it back to the hieroglyphs, and pointed out that it seemed that Anubis and what must represent the Smoke Monster (Cerberus from here on in) seem to be at odds.
This got me thinking.
When Ben was judged by Cerberus, it showed him his sins, he repented, and it left back into the holes. Then Alex shows up to lay a beatdown. It is generally assumed that both entities are Cerberus. But what if we are looking at two different powers here.
Duality is a large part of Lost. White and Black, Science and Faith, Past and Present, so on and so on. Why do we believe that all these aspects of Cerberus are the same creature?
Remember when Locke saw the monster way back in Season 1? He described it as a white light. That is NOT the creature we've been seeing destroying and judging people.
And look to poor Eko. He comes face to face with Cerberus, who scans him. Then, Yemi comes to him, trying to get him to repent, which he does not. To which Yemi replies "What makes you think I am Yemi?" or basically that. Then bada bing bada boom, dead Eko.
I think we have two different monsters. A judge, and an executioner. The smoke around Ben was calm, and very much not menacing after he stopped freakin' out. Then boom, Alex is all over him like white on rice. What makes us think this is Smokey?
Perhaps one is Cerberus, and one is Anubis. Again, a duality of mythology. Perhaps Jacob is the one appearing as people and animals from different people's pasts. Who knows.
One thing is certain, I have trouble believing that all is as simple and cut as it seems.Theory by Justin Jessel
