So, again, well done Darlton, you fooled us into believing that Caesar was of more prominence than his sawed-off-shotgun-blast-to-the-chest (SOSBTTC!) demise suggested... Hey Illana, what's up?!
When Lapidus got back to the beach, it seemed as though a lot had been going on in what seemed like a short-space of time. They had found the guns (how convenient, thank you Island), & were extremely focused on 1., finding out "What lies in the shadow of the statue?" (WLITSOTS), & 2., transporting their heavy-duty metal box to some unknown destination(well, for the viewer at least).
So, obviously, WLITSOTS was either a., a codename used by Illana to figure out if Lapidus was playing on their team, or b., she has no idea of the answer to the question, but that it was her mission to find out. If the latter is true, then the question was probably given to her by whomever she has been hired by, & they instructed her to ask the question to anybody who seemed as though they might have subsequent information to that question & beyond.
Now, it's not clear right now as to whether Illana is a goody or a baddy, but it's LIKELY that with her big metal-box of tricks, she's a baddy. Again, it seems as though she is probably either working for Widmore (which I think would be lame), or maybe the Economist, or perhaps even Mr. Paik. There's definitely some air of "third-partyness"...
So what's in the box?! I have a hunch that it's explosives, & we're seeing the reason why the statue is no longer erect, & just one foot. Why she's been instructed to take-out the statue is up for debate, but Illana's got a conundrum to get through herself before we can figure that one out. I believe, that if this theory is correct, then she's ended up in the wrong timezone, & thought that she would have ended up in the past with the rest of the Losties, when of course, the statue was erect. We know that in her current timezone, aka, the present (or mayyyyyyyyyybe the future), the statue has been mostly destroyed. The question is, is Illana going to undergo some time-travel herself to get back to a point in time when the statue was erect to complete her mission, OR, am I just wayyyyyyyyyy off, lol?! If anyone's with me, how do YOU think she could get back?
If the statue is related to fertility, & after seeing the problems with fertility on the island once the statue has been destroyed, could we assume that the statue has some exotic power? We've seen the temple's power with it housing Smokey, so why not other seemingly-inanimate objects, especially if they were built around the same time in the ancient past. Also, these old structures all seem to be linked by catacombs, like the tunnels under the temple to the hieroglyphic door in Ben's house, to the Cerberus vents & beyond. It's funny how Dharma seemingly copied the Island's ancient network with their own network of Dharma stations.
So ultimately, if the reason for taking-out the statue was to prevent any more births on the island, then it would seem as though somebody in the external world wanted the Others to subside & die off, thus, clearing a safer way for them to return to (if they've been there before, like Widmore), or go to the Island. Of course, I think Richard would still be there, but we've seen lots of other people age so it's feasible.
Ultimately, if I'm completely way off here, I do believe that Illana's faction could end up in the past, with their giant-box-of-delights, & be responsible for the Event... I think a load of shit blowing up could warrant the name, Event, but even if it's not explosives, I think it could be something that will contribute.
First time posting, hope I've brought up some alternative thoughts. Rip me to shreds, it's all good!
P.S. Just as a side note, if there's no explanation as to why the Dharma accepted that Juliet was a mechanic for 3 years on the island but then was suddenly able to deliver Amy's baby, & then again was allowed to attempt to operate on Ben, then I'm gonna be pissssssssssssssssed!
