Some conclusions I was thinking about based on the answers we got in "Dead is Dead" and the WH,H theory:
Ben and Charles never had any future knowledge of anything. Ben and Widmore never traveled to the future (except a few years with Ben and the frozen wheel), they never experienced anything before, they're not trying to change the future or past, the "rules" are not based on time travel but based on the island/Jacob's intents on whether it wants that person to return. Obviously Ben was meant at that time to return because the island/Jacob wanted him to come back and become the new Ethan (subordinate) to Locke, whereas Locke is now taking the role of Ben (leader). It is now proven that Ben was just a tortured man that made one too many bad decisions in life, but I believe he has now changed his ways after the smoke/jacob showed him his life with Alex and thus gave him one final warning to behave. Widmore, on the other hand, wants blood. He has always been a devious person with ill intent and in some ways controlled Richard, until he was forced to leave the island due to his! violent and arrogant ways. Widmore will return to the island again and will most likely return to the island, with the help of Eloise Hawking (I have more theories on her later). One of the final scenes of Season 6 will most likely be a stand-off between Ben and Widmore on the island, and we will be rooting for Ben the whole time.Theory by Strange Stranger
