i think as of last it is quite clear what the smoke monster does. it protects the temple bu living under it and judging anyone who goes near the temple wall. if they are deemed to be harmful it kills them. otherwise it lets them live.

i believe when eko saw yemi we was seeing the smoke monster from his point of view. same as when jack sees christian and the same when ben sees alex. it is all from their point of view. smokey knows what these people want to see and how it can exploit their emotions so it uses the thing closest to them. then by showing their true emotions it can detect if they are truely sorry.

why did it let ben live?

firstly im not sure if alex was supposed to die or not, but it was hinted by charles. however, i think it let ben live because he wanted to stay on the island so much he let his daughter die. he loves the island and is willing to do anything for it, right or wrong.

is john lock now the smoke monster?

a. yes he is which is why he wasnt in view when we saw smokey and why he was 'running an errand' when ben summond it or

b. no, he is actually reincarnated, but dead is dead right?


i think christian lock and all the other visions people see when people are supposed to be dead or not around (like walt) is just the island guiding people to do whats supposed to happen
