In the beginning of "The Man Behind the Curtain", Olivia is teaching the class about Volcanic eruption and mentions that adding a bicarbonate (containing hydrogen) causes an eruption. Annie then asks if this is what happened to the island, and Olivia replies "Yes, a long time ago...". Also, later in the episode, when Ben and Locke approach Jacob's cabin, you notice soot or ash surrounding the area...
I don't think they would've added both of those scenes if they weren't relevant in some way. Perhaps Jughead (Hydrogen Bomb) has a part to play in the eruption? Could it be the reason the statue is now in ruins? Theory by Christopher / G_O_N_E
