I think the smoke monster is the essence of the god Anubis,
this would explain why it speaks to islanders through the dead.I also believe Christian Sheperd has been to the island before and that is why he became a drunk, perhaps He lead the others once.
i think the others knew that the passengers of flight 815 would come to the island, after all it's Kate Austin who is responsible for Ben's origin amongst the others, right?
