the smoke monster, in my opinion is an ancient egyption god who was dormant before dharma got there. he was in the temple but trapped inside. the hole outside the temple was not there before. the cv vents were not there before, but created by someone to release it. the gate was created by the others and it was built by richard.
we have not seen the monster in the 70s at all. we have seen it in the 80s. the smoke monster does not attact the others because richard. it does not want the dharma there. thats why the fences are there to stop the monster, not to keep the others out because the fence does not stop them from getting in. the others created the vents to help stop dharma. richard knew if they went out of the boundaries that the monster would be waiting.
the monster is doing anything it can to protect the island and it will kill anyone who it judges not to be suitable to be on the island. if they are supposed to be there for a reason, then they get to live. once it was released it then threatened the dharma inititive so much that they had to construct a sonar fence to keep it out.
