Richard likes kids. He was adorable with Ben (both times) and he seemed sweet to little Alex. We know that the Island tends to call back people with prior connections to it. We also know that Richard is very, very old.
I wonder if our Losties are actually Richard's descendants (from before he ended up on the Island?), and that's why the Island called them to it? (And no, that would not make the many relationships among them gross. If you share a common ancestor several centuries back, it's not incest.)
I think Richard's adorableness with kids stems from the fact that he had to leave his own children to serve the Island. And the Island, recognizing Richard's inherent awesomeness, decided to summon his descendants 'home' to be with him in order to reward him for his faithfulness.
