*credit BEN BOARDS on TLT theory boards for the initial idea...i ran with it and 'proved the timeframes' so to speak during the conversation. i feel this is a very solid theory...please let me know your thoughts...
So here we go:
Like Miles explained, the timelines are chronological for everyone, but got a bit messed up IN PERCEPTION for the time jumpers. So let's take Hurley for example, he is now in 1977. We, with our perception would say that he will be on 815 in the future, but for Hurley this is his past and 1977 is his own present. He would of course be on 815, because it already happened, just not for all of the participating people yet. And that is why he, of course could die and is not as save as he thinks he is.
And that exactly could be used to explain the apparitons, the ghosts. What if the ghosts have died for our 'present' 815ers/losties, who see them in "their (the ghosts)past", but the ghost itself is not dead yet, because the death has not happened yet TO THAT PERSON?
Example: Christian Shephard.
Died in the perception of Jack and a few other people in 2004.
But is this necessarily the same thing for Christian? Maybe Christian can walk around on this island because for him his death lies in his future? Is this possible? Isn't this the simplest explanation for all the ghosts?...im going to try and make this idea 'kindergarten clear' so bear with me.
CS goes to the island in outside world time 2000-01 roughly the time jack and him had the falling out w/ jacks fiance at the time ('the watch'- 'the hunting party') it culminates in christian loosing his license 'all the best cowboys have dad issues') and he disapears OFF AND ON for an undisclosed amount of time.
CS eventually ends up in sydney and dies, and jack comes to get his body...but what did he do BEFORE THIS TIME?
My theory is he actually finds/goes back to the island (i have a feeling he was a leader AFTER jacob...but BEFORE whidmore...nothing to back that up except a point someone made jacob= OT christian=NT locke=enlightened)so lets just assume he GOES BACK for my theory. maybe he was there as a younger man., or maybe he DID lead. doesnt matter.
ok, so back to christian smith time...he is 'off the reservation' as far as jack and his family are concerned(01)...no contact, or very infrequent, quick communications. we are to assume that he is loosing himself to drink...however...what if...HE DOES NOT DIE YET.(02-04)
He someone gets to the island as a normal human being (perhaps the sub? it should still be working...and im going to assume the time he and jack had a falling out was around 2000/2001)so lets say he gets there around 01/02.
He lives the part we know on the island until 2007/08. (6 years - during that time he is going thru some time displacement, either jumps, or using orchid time machine @ top part of orchid or turning FDW or what have you...time travel MUST be involved though!
(this also may explain how he gets to the cave w/ locke in whenever in the past)
he does what he needs to do (which is what we are seeing in season 5...and remember the 'lost scence' where he tells vincent to wake jack? perhaps he was ALREADY ON THE ISLAND in HIS PAST...and that WASNT his 'reanimated body'?
ok, so he does se5 & 6 stuff...and then lets say he turns the wheel and goes back in time and is also now in the outside world... or perhaps he joins the others, and then gets access to the sub - or perhaps depending on the time, stays until (assuming he doesnt age since he is time traveling...) he is able to use the sub to get back to a time slightly after he and jack have the falling out. im not sure on all the details, obviously, since this is a theory :) all i know is if he took the sub...he had to get back in 04(right around the time he had to come back to die) since locke destroys it late 04.
ok, so christian is BACK on the island after 6 years...now keep in mind, he is also in a time CLOSE TO when him and jack had a falling out in 01 or os(remember that scenario at the top? im bringing it full circle now).
He becomes desparate and wants to go back...becomes a drunk, looses his license (however, to HIM this has happened twice now...the only thing was the 'first time around' he was always this 'older' christian coming back to fill in his life off island while his 'present' self is back on the island helping the losties in their time jumps etc).
He goes to australia to find the island again (by meeting people he knows will be there in his experiances? - sawyer, ana lucia, clare and her mom), then he dies in 2004, causing jack to come get his body on the plane to the island.
i suggest he spoke w/ ms hawking, and similar to locke, was told the only way he COULD GET BACK was to go back dead.
Jack's view:
father and him have falling out before wedding, CS leaves, but comes back shortly later, only to leave again
Father dies in 2004, Jack takes the coffin onto the plane
Arriving on the island the only contradicting point is the missing of CS' corpse.
For Jack he is dead and so he thinks he goes crazy when seeing his father. But Christian is in his own timeline part (seperated above!) when he arrives after his first time jump on the island, and voila! He is alive.
