Nick told me I am thinking out of the box. This theory will be out of the box completely. I am positive none will agree with me but I will do it anyways.
First I want to say that the real Richard Alpert was a Harvard professor who got fired and then later on became Ram Dass. He wrote a book Be Here Now, published in 1971 (Lost Dbutz posted a theory and it is brilliant, you might want to read it. It is among "Best rated theories here" and it is called like the book Be Here Now). And after you read it you will maybe understand why am I writing this. He also wrote the book "The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on The Tibetan Book of the Dead" which he dedicated to Aldous Huxley. Aldous Huxley wrote two very good books.

2. The island
Brave New World was often paired with Orwell 1984. And it talks about future world, negative utopia etc. And it starts with the sentence "year of our Ford 632" Meaning Year of our Lord. So Ford is their Lord. Intersting.
The Island talks about the hidden island, talking birds, Pala people, group living society etc.

I believe he is the ultimate one. The first one in chain of command. I think he is the island. I know it sounds ridiculous. But I really think he is either the island or Smoke. If not both. :)
Why would I get an idea like that? He is not time traveler. If he is then how is it possible that he doesn't know who Kate is? It is not possible. His time on the island goes linear. He meets people first time he sees them. Meaning he met Locke in 1954. Daniel, Miles and Charlotte too. He met sawyer in 1974. Kate in 1977. If he is not time traveler he is not from the future too. And either way if he is either one or both he would age in 50 years. 50 years passed and if he is human his body would know how much time have passed. And we would see it. I don't believe he is Egyptian God too. Because as far as we know he was never judged by Smoke Monster. Not even after he saved Ben and remember, it is not what island wanted. It is what Richard wanted. Hm. Interesting. So if he is not the island and island never wanted Ben to be saved and never wanted Ben for the leader but Richard did all that anyways against island wishes then why Smokey never judged him? And when I think about ! it Richard was never ever anywhere near Smokey at any time. We never saw them together. I wonder why. Because there is no need. You cannot judge the island. You are there to serve it and protect it.
But now island wants Locke to be the leader. But who is the one who is in charge of choosing the new leader? Richard and only Richard. When he sets his mind on something there's no stopping him. Meaning he does whatever he wants.
We saw Temple. It is divided in two parts. Upper and lower part. Lower part, the underground is Smokeys part. The upper part is where Richard took Ben and healed him. Charles said: "You should've been dead but the island saved you."
No it wasn't the island. It was Richard who saved him. He was the one who took him to the Temple and did God knows what. The reason why he doesnt age is because the Richard we see is the personification of the island in human form. The same way we see Smoke as Alex. Alex was the personification of the Smoke at the moment even thou she was dead. Island needs to speak through someone or take the form of someone and speak its mind. And now it really made up his mind. It is John Locke he wants. It was John Locke since 1954 but John Locke was not ready at the time. And Richard himself said he needs him to find his purpose. And now he finally found it. Walkabout is over after 50 years.

I know how it happen. He met Richard in 1954. The island (Richard) made his wishes come true and now he will protect it and serve it better then anyone before. Because he has always been Man of Faith. And since he met the island, and saw how beautiful it was, and since the island gave him back his feelings in legs, gave him back his dignity..and gave him back his life (according to Ben this happened only once, now, never before and you have to admit there are some things that are quite different between John and Christian)there is nothing he wouldn't do for the island now.Theory by Monika
