I had a little revelation while watching "Dead is Dead" this past Wednesday that I thought I would share here.
Damon and Carlton never do things by accident. They have meaning and purpose to everything that they do. This made me start to wonder about the episode title for this past week's episode. "Dead is Dead." We have experienced a lot of death on this show already and it seems weird to me that Locke's death is so different from all the other character deaths we have experienced. In fact, even Ben admits that he has never before experienced someone coming back from the dead. He tells Sun that "dead is dead."
I know that Locke is special but he DID die. Is he really so special that he would be brought back to life? This made me start to wonder...what if Locke IS still dead. What if the whole time we have been seeing Locke since he's been back on the island it hasn't really been him, it's been the smoke monster. Here are some things that happened in the last episode which I think support my claim:
- Locke seems to be calling Ben on his lies (and crap) a lot throughout this episode. He seems to really know what Ben is thinking and feeling. The vey first thing he says to Ben when he wakes up is "Welcome back to the land of the living." This is ironic, shouldn't Ben be saying this to Locke? He later wants to discuss "the elephant in the room" and Ben goes into this tangent abut why he had to do what he did to Locke. Locke responds with "All I wanted was an apology." Smokey wouldn't need to hear Ben's reasoning; he just wants to test Ben to see if he really feels bad about killing John. He calls Ben out on why he is really going to be "judged" by the island (that he let his daughter be killed and not that he moved the island). Why would Locke think that it was because of Alex and not about loving the island? The smoke monster seems to know intimate things about people. It would know that Ben spent the last 3 years looking for Penny to make the scores even between! him and Widmore. Locke didn't know this. That Locke seems so certain about this was a little strange, after all it was 3 years ago and Locke never really saw what Ben's relationship was with Alex (but smokey did, as we saw from this episode).
- Locke insists on coming with Ben as he is being judged. One could perceive this as Locke just wanting to come along to make sure that Ben actually follows through with being judged, but it could also mean that Locke needed to come because he is the smoke monster. And when they are with Sun, Locke again reminds Ben that he has something to do.
(Now to the more concrete evidence):
- When Ben calls the smoke monster he goes outside and waits for it to come, telling Sun she should go inside because what is about to come he has no control over. He then asks where Locke is and Sun says that he went to go do something and says she didn't ask him where he was going. Then he comes walking out of the jungle giving no explanation for what he was doing. (And Ben was right, what came out of the jungle [Locke] he was absolutely no control over). The black smoke seems as though it is not coming into Dharmaville like it did the last time Ben summoned it, but that's because it is already there but it is taking the form of Locke. Locke says that they should go to it and Ben tells Locke that he can only summon it; he doesn't know where it is. Locke says that he does (because HE is the black smoke).
- On the way to the temple; Ben wants to know how Locke can know where the smoke monster is and Locke says something along the lines of "Now you know how I felt for so long" in regards to being in the dark (while slyly avoiding answering the question). This is smokey's way of saying to Ben that he has only known more than Ben has and that he is finally taking the reins back from Ben. They arrive at the temple and somehow Locke knows exactly where they are supposed to go; under the temple not into it like Ben originally thinks. My question is, how could the REAL John Locke know this? He has only been there once before and he was not very close to the temple wall, he was at the well. Are we supposed to assume that Locke and Jin had an unseen conversation about Jin seeing Montand being dragged into the cave by the smoke monster? I don't think that Damon and Carlton would leave that conversation out of the show. Locke would have no reason to believe that the smoke monster re! sided there. If Ben doesn't even know that that's where smoky "lives" then Locke definitely shouldn't.
-Ben and Locke go into the cave. Ben tells Locke that he wants to do it on his own, which conveniently makes it easier for smokey to not give his identity as John Locke away. Ben then (again, conveniently) falls through the floor and Locke goes to try and find something to get Ben out of the whole. It is only when Locke completely disappears that smokey finally emerges and "judges" Ben. Alex/smokey then basically strangles her father and says that she knows that Ben is already planning a way to kill John Locke again. She says that she will hunt him down and kill him herself if he TRIES to kill him. He can't really kill Locke because Locke is already dead. But smokey wants to scare Ben out of doing it because by Ben trying to kill Locke, this would reveal to everyone that smokey is Locke and smokey would no longer be able to use Locke's body as a way of correcting the past mistakes and helping get the island back to how it is supposed to be. Ben then looks as if he is ! cowering in fear. This is because he thinks that the smoke monster will know that he is still planning on trying to kill Locke even after being threatened not to.
- Then, as soon as Alex/the smoke monster disappears, Locke goes calling after Ben. He has conveniently found a vine at the exact perfect time that it took for Ben to have his interaction with smokey. It is interesting that Locke and Smokey are never seen together. I think it is smokey is manifesting itself as Locke.
(There is another part to my theory but it contains a spoiler so I can't say it here...I guess I will just have to wait and see if I'm right)!
"Dead is dead"...why should Locke's death be any different than any other character's death that we have seen so far? Damon and Carlton made a point of writing in the section where Ben is talking about this with Sun. Ben talks about seeing a lot of crazy things on this island, but never anything like this. I think there is more to this than meets the eye. I love John Locke, I think he is by far the best and most moving character on the show, but I am sorry to say...I think his time has come. I think dead IS dead :( or I guess another way of putting it might be, WHATEVER HAPPENED, HAPPENED!
So that's my theory. I hope you enjoy it, and it's not too confusing to read! It's hard to articulate.
