So I took the time to rethink about how this station came to be, since it has been apart of some major plots throughout lost.
First Ill point out some hints/facts towards the station:
- Sayid points out that a compass is not showing true north, something is pushing the needle off coarse.
- Sayid/Jack go under the station to try and get by the wall of cement, but fail. Sayid hints "The last time he heard concrete being poured over everything in this way, was Chernobyl." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster )
- Sayid makes a guess that a Geothermal generator is apart of this station.
- Kelvin slurs some facts while drunk, stating the "incident" involved electromagnetism, that there was a "leak" ( BIG HINT ), this leak caused a buildup, pushing the button releases the buildup before it gets too big.
- Danial travels in time ( in the 50s? ) in s5, and encounters a hydrogen bomb, which has in fact been leaking. After inspecting the bomb he instructs the "Others" to bury the bomb and cover it with concrete.
Now for a few other facts I looked up myself:
- Chernobyl was a nuclear reactor accident.
- Electromagnetism will cause a compass to not point to true north ( While preparing for an evening lecture on 21 April 1820, Hans Christian Ørsted developed an experiment which provided evidence that surprised him. As he was setting up his materials, he noticed a compass needle deflected from magnetic north when the electric current from the battery he was using was switched on and off. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnatism )
- Geothermal power is energy generated from heat stored in the earth, or the collection of absorbed heat derived from underground. Geothermal power requires no fuel, and is therefore virtually emissions free and insusceptible to fluctuations in fuel cost. And because a geothermal power station doesn't rely on transient sources of energy, its capacity factor can be quite large; up to 90% in practice.
How does electromagnetism and a hydrogen bomb fit together?
- Magnetic confinement fusion, which is a way of creating nuclear fusion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_confinement_fusion
- Geothermal power can provide a high amount of energy needed to conduct the majority of these "experiments" without the worry of cost and resources.
Other notes:
- The island has some special properties that are unexplained, mixing these properties with the force of a hydrogen bomb could destroy more then just the island, hence Kelvins "just saving the world" quote.
- The fail safe - I think this is hooked up somehow with the orchid, providing a way to save the island ( or the world? ) from the horrible fate of the hydrogen bomb exploding.
There are a lot of other questions that go along with this theory, but I think this seems like the best fit for the origin of "The Swan" Theory by Sean Jones
