I had an old school idea that I'm not sure if anyone else noticed -- but in a seemingly classic Clark Kent-like blunder Locke disappears just as Ben goes on to summon the Smoke monster through the broken floor. Why would Locke be so in-tuned to exactly where smokey originates from, only to lead Ben there and then stumble away looking for a rope to get Ben out of the very hole he needs to be in -- effectively missing Ben's smokie encounter (all by accident)?
One thing we should note here is that it isn't an accident... and nothing about the way this season has been playing out lends itself to happenstance.
An so just like Superman disguises himself as Clark Kent, the island has been disguising itself as our Losties all along -- Boone, Christian, Horace, Walt,etc... and in this case it looks like the island has appropriated Locke's body and consciousness to lead Ben to his rightful path. Since Locke's dead body came back to the island his confidence and leadership has been off the charts.... the reason may be that smokie and the island are now operating Locke like a puppet.
The same can obviously be said for Alex. We saw exactly how and why this happens with Alex reappearing to Ben -- because the island needed to get through to Ben once and for all, to confront him and scare the sh** out of him so that he can help "Locke" finish his work on the island, whatever that might entail.
Christian is also being manipulated by smokie and the island... for example showing Sun how she can be reunited with Jin and leading Locke to the exit of the island at the beginning of the season.
What the end game is at this point, not exactly sure... but a couple things we need to think about:
• perhaps the purge is an event that was never supposed to happen as the island intended.
• we know Richard Alpert has been trying to recruit Locke his entire life to come to this island, for what reason we dont know yet but obviously Locke is going to be a savior of some sort for this island... perhaps Locke needs to become Jacob, perhaps he is dying or his time is running out or something to that effect.
• Locke has become ever more confident in terms of his faith in the island and what the island wants -- probably because he IS the island at this point, he has been reincarnated BY the island, is now ONE with the island.
• Locke may have to time travel back to the 70's at some point to reunite Sun and Jin, but also to perhaps stop the events that lead to the purge.
Thats all for now! Theory by Andrew
