Just a thought here...
We all know Locke wasn't supposed to leave the Island, but because he did and failed to bring back the Oceanic 6 he ended up dying and beind resurrected when returning to the Island. It seems as if Christian's case was quite similar. He knew somehow that the flight from Australia to Los Angeles would end up crashing on the Island so, the only way to Jack to be on that plane is for Christian to die. This doesn't directly explain how Christian originally came to be on the Island, or why he left, but it can explain why he keeps appearing as... whatever he is. Whether he knows Widmore, or Ms. Hawking I have no idea but it fits together.
Perhaps in the episode where Christian is shown fighting with Claire's mother, I believe in Season 1 or 2, he is also influencing Claire somehow to get on that certain flight to go to Los Angeles (I'm not quite sure on this one since I seem to forget the time period that was in but it still could happen).
Anyway... it's something to chew on and an attept to semi-explain why Christian (or his ghost or body et cetera) was chosen to represent Jacob and his mysterious figure.
