I think that for some reason the island didn't want Alex the island. So, it sent the exterminator... Smokey to take care of the baby, before she was born. It could be that Smokey knew that the baby should not be born on the island. here are some thoughts...
1) Soon after arriving on the island, the French expedition ventured into the jungle. They soon came across the Smoke Monster. Nadine was silently taken, smokey may have thought she was the pregnant lady. But then found out that she wasn't and was killed by Smokey. It could be that Smokey knew there was a pregnant women now on the island. Smokey grabbed the first female - Whoops, wrong one, sorry...
2) So then Smokey, came back to the expedition, and decided to lure the expedition into its Lair. Then it could then control the expedition and get rid of the baby. So, Smokey pulled Montand down the whole, it wasn't expecting a tug-a-war and in the process Montand lost his arm. Smokey won't be denied! So, now Smokey has bait, and the women was bound to come down the hole after the team member... In steps Jin - Dang it... No Rousseau...
3) OK, so the rest of the team entered Smokey's lair and they were reprogrammed... Kill the pregnant Lady at all costs the island must be protected! But Danielle was onto them, She got rid of all of the reprogrammed teams attempts to off her. She removed the bolt from Robert's rifle, and for good cause. He tried to shoot her, but Alas, she shot him dead. I could imagine Smokey was fuming in his Lair! French Chick - 3... Smokey - 0
4) So Danielle discovered that the Smoke Monster for whatever reason can't venture onto the beach. It could be the sand get's into the smoke, but I'm thinking that somehow standing water is a repellant of some sort to Smokey. (but that is another theory I'll have to write up soon). So, Danielle stayed on the beach and was safe for a little while. Meanwhile... For whatever reason the island wants Danielle dead, maybe the thought is her child will cause problems on the island.
So, they send out the welcoming crew to remove her and her child. So, Widmore sends Ben off to kill Danielle. Maybe Ben used the pillar of black smoke as a warning, because Danielle was onto the Smokey's intentions... So, Ben arrives at the camp intent on killing Rousseau, but finds out she has a child. He decides to take the baby and then tells Danielle a pertent piece of information: "When you hear whispers, run the other way". I think Ben tells Danielle this, because there will be further attempts to kill her. Since it appears the island wants her dead... Ben returns to Widmore, and says, No, I didn't kill her and look here is her baby! Widmore is like, kill it now! But doesn't go into detail that the island doesn't want the baby here. Ben is like, no, if you want the baby dead, you kill her, and don't call the baby an IT! Widmore is like whatever, I'm so done.
Here is the dialogue between Widmore and Ben on the dock...
BEN: Because I won't be selfish. Because I'll sacrifice anything to protect this Island.
WIDMORE: You wouldn't sacrifice Alex.
BEN: You're the one who wanted her dead, Charles, not the Island.
WIDMORE: I hope you're right, Benjamin, because if you aren't, and it is the Island that wants her dead, she'll be dead. And one day, you'll be standing where I'm standing now. You'll be the one being banished, and then you'll finally realize that you cannot fight the inevitable. I'll be seeing you, boy.
5) Somewhere Smokey Freaks out and goes on a rampage. Danielle sometime later decides, she isn't safe and goes into hiding, always staying clear from the killing crew that follows the whispers. Maybe later the island decides to buy its time with Alex and allow her to live... For Now, maybe Smokey finds a new baby to raise, known as Karl...?
6) In enters Keamy, the island is like, OK, time for course correction, and there goes Alex... Now Ben is like WTF?! that wasn't suppose to happen, when I had my visions of the future I saw Alex in them. Damn that widmore! He warned me back when I kicked him off the island, that the dang island wanted Alex dead. No, it was Widmore that killed Alex. What was that Locke? We need to move the island? OK, I will get my revenge on Charles and protect the island at the same time. Then when Ben sees Little Charlie, he remembers when he first saw Baby Alex... Then Desmond tackles Ben and opens a can on him... But, did Ben retaliate? Theory by 1Miletogo
