Here’s an interesting theory for you,
From the first time we saw hieroglyphs on the Temple's protective wall in "This Place is Death" I've had a sneaking suspicion that the judgment that seems to be ever so prevalent on Lost is closely related to the afterlife judgment in The Book of the Dead that describes the goings-on within The Hall of Ma'at. The appearance of carvings of Anubis in “Dead is Dead” has me almost 100% convinced this ritual is important (whether literally or figuratively) to the overall history and mythology of The Island.
Here are some links for anyone who wants to research it further:

Here are just a few of the questions I keep asking myself:
Is Smokey Ammut?
Is Richard, Ben, Christian, or even Locke sometimes acting as a form(s) of Anubis?
Does the name of the falcon headed god Horus have something to do with Horace?
Is that the legendary “Hurley Bird” above Osiris in the chamber room?
Is the Hurley Bird a “ba-bird”? (http://mcclungmuseum.utk.edu/research/renotes/rn-14txt.htm)
I’m sure there are other observations that can be made linking this ritual to Lost, so I hope this stirs up some good research and conversation.
