“Imagine a box, John. And whatever you wanted to be in that box, there it would be. Somewhere on this island is a very large box.”-Ben
“I had a dream about you, John. You were in a suit, and there were people all around you, and they wanted to hurt you.”-Walt
In “Dead is Dead” Ilana and Bram find guns, ask Frank “What lies in the shadow of the statue?” and they have a box that Ben asks about.
Ben: What’s in the Box?
Ilana: Just some things that need to be moved.
(Ben smiles and walks away with his “I know more than you” look)
This theory is about what is in the box, how it got there, why Ilana and Bram are taking it, and a few other loose ends related to it.
Let’s start with Ilana’s point of view. She knew that John said he died and Caesar would have told Ilana about John’s experiences on the island and being killed by Ben. Ilana is this “bounty hunter” who apologized to Sayid for his handcuffs by saying “At least we’re in business” and plays dumb about Benjamin Linus when Sayid asks. And she said Sayid’s final destination was Guam. She also mumbled someone’s name when she gained consciousness after the 316 crash. It is probably the name of the person that is the real reason that she is on 316. Ilana made a deal to transport Sayid to Guam in order to get to see her loved one. And this person is someone we have already seen, cause that’s how Lost works. This person is probably a close family member that she hasn’t seen in a long time.
I’ll get to the point. Richard Alpert is Ilana’s father.
Richard is very paternal towards the dying Ben in 1977. Richard can leave and return to the island at will, his daughter would have to be born off the island or on the island prior to the Swan’s operation. Ilana appears to be between 25-35 years old which would place her date of birth from 2007 between 1972-1982 (Dharma 1977 look familiar?). She somehow knew about something that “lies in the shadow of the statue.” She is skilled with a gun and kicking skulls in, she takes charge when 316 crashes, and she avoids telling Ben what’s in the Box because she knows its important. She used the death of Caesar and the knowledge of what’s in the box to rally support for going after Ben, John, Frank, and Sun.
It is Ilana’s crew who shoots at the left-behinders on the boats because anyone who takes one of the boats without permission is an “other” to them. My guess is that Bram is the one who gets shot, the other boat disappears in front of their eyes, they find John and Ben and they want answers.
How did the box get on 316? Hawking arranged it as well as Ilana’s reunion with Richard.
What’s in the Box? Something big that they can only move with polls on its sides, which means that it is one thing, not “things” like Ilana said. She was right it does need to be moved because it is useful enough to be taken because they will need it later. And considering they are feeling threatened after Caesar’s death, it probably is easily identified as important to their survival. It is probably not a weapon because they already found guns at the Hydra. It is probably not John’s body because they wouldn’t want to take it with them for their survival. It can’t be a living person because there were no air holes. It will be involved with the prophesy of John being surrounded by dangerous people. Eloise Hawking would want it to be on the island so it is probably very scientific. She probably helped design it or “a clever fellow” did.
The Box contains a homing beacon to accurately locate the island in space and time and broadcast its location to the outside world.
Ilana and Bram would want to use it to be rescued. It would be protected better if it stayed in the box. Hawking, Widmore, or both would need it to be able to return to the island anytime they wanted on the correct bearing. Ilana will want it to reach her father so he can decide what to do with it. Ben knew what it was because he wanted Widmore to get to the island so he could finally kill him. John will want it destroyed, Ben won’t.
And one final loose end, if Tunisia is the exit, there must be an entrance. The homing beacon will allow the location of this permanent doorway to the island where the newly formed Dharma Army will march to the island for the War that is coming. Theory by LBNF
