Eloise Hawking has become an important character in the mythology of this season and it is highly speculated that she is responsible for the “Shadow of the Statue” crew’s mission. In order to find out more about what that mission might be, forming a timeline of her life is necessary.
October 1954- A young woman named Ellie is part of the others who capture the freighties and bring them to Richard. Daniel reveals that his group is from the future, tells her that Jughead hasn’t gone off 50 years in the future, tells her she looks familiar, and she knows he’s in love with his red-haired teammate. She fights with Charles Widmore and can handle a gun. She knows who John Locke is and that “Jacob sent him.” She witnesses Sawyer, Juliet, Miles, John, Daniel, and Charlotte vanish into thin air.
~1970- Daniel Faraday is born and is raised by Eloise Hawking. He never spends more than a few months on the island (because he never gets a nosebleed because he had less exposure to the island than Miles, who did get a nosebleed) or he is immune to temporal displacement sickness due to his experiments, or another reason having to do with his mother being an Other. (Its interesting that Sawyer and Juliet get nosebleeds at the same time but Locke and Jin don’t ever get nosebleeds. Maybe Sawyer has been on the island before!)
1977- When an injured Ben Linus is brought into the others territory, an Other points out that Ellie should be told about it and that Charles will be angry. Richard says that he doesn’t answer to them.
1988- Eloise is not at the Other’s campfire when Ben kidnaps Alex.
1992- Eloise is not at the purge or Widmore’s banishment.
~1993-1996- A picture of Eloise Hawking and Brother Campbell sits in the monastery where Desmond is fired and then he meets Penny.
1996- During Desmond’s failsafe temporal displacement, she tells him that he has to enter the sailing race, crash on the island, push the Swan’s button for 3 years and turn the failsafe key or everyone will die. She predicts a man’s death, describes course correction, and discourages Desmond from being with Penny.
Later 1996- Desmond meets Professor Faraday at Oxford University, Daniel is at least 26 years old then. Daniel names his consciousness-traveling rat Eloise. Daniel’s experiment may have been to reproduce his mother’s ability. Widmore backed the experiments.
2000- (Libby gives Desmond her boat so he can sail around the world in Widmore’s race. Libby also is in Santa Rosa hospital watching Hurley.)
Late 2004- (Bram kidnaps Miles to try to convince him not to go to the island. He uses the shadow code and says that he’s on the side that’s going to win.)
-Daniel reaches the island and predicts 2 out of 3 of the playing cards.
2007- Eloise Hawking uses the Lamppost station to identify the window and flight to return to the island. Ben knew Eloise Hawking but didn’t know how to get back to the island. Ben appears surprised to hear that she is Faraday’s mother. She knows who built the Lamppost, how to work it, how to return to the island, she somehow gets Locke’s suicide note and tells only Jack that he must have John serve as a proxy for his father. She tells Desmond that the island is not through with him. Widmore knows where Hawking is and he told Desmond willingly.
-(Ilana subdues Sayid and puts him on Ajira 316. She doesn’t know who Ben Linus is. She and Bram are transporting a crate and they use the shadow code to see whose side Frank is on.)
She’s been described by The Powers That Be as a “some sort of temporal policeman in place to make sure that everybody who is supposed to get to the island, does." And this is related to the grand scale of Fate versus free will. So a clairvoyant former Other who can solve complex equations makes sure that everyone gets to the island on time to do what they are “supposed to do,” not because they want to. So if she got everyone on Ajira 316 who was supposed to get to the island, it must be to fulfill another of her future visions like Desmond’s fate. Which means it could be Fate that needs a little help from free will.
And since she didn’t want everyone to die because of a time-paradox with Desmond, she probably cares about humanity in general. She cares enough to temporarily work with Ben. She probably cares enough to have not told Widmore because he’d just change the rules, which isn’t good for humanity. She probably was the one who let the Dharma Initiative stay on the island, because she knew that Fate needed them to be there. But she left the island or was exiled sometime before the Purge. Maybe to raise her son, to play her part in helping fate, or to avoid the Purge.
Eloise Hawking and her “SOTS” crew have a mission to solve a problem that existed before the Dharma Initiative arrived on the island. In 2007, they will resume that mission. And, NO. They are not the new Dharma Initiative. The Comic-Con video is not canon to the show. The DI will not be reconstituted, but its original purpose will be fulfilled by the “SOTS” and the lost survivors. The future will be who will help the mission and who will help themselves.
