The Valenzetti Equation predicts the end of the world. There are 6 variables that the Dharma Initiative were attempting to manipulate in order to prevent this: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42...6 numbers. Then you have the Oceanic 6. My theory is that Jack, Kate, Sayid, Sun, Hurley and Aaron each represent one of the numbers, and that outside forces (whether the globalists; i.e. Widmore, Paik, Hanso; Ellie Hawking and her "shadow of the statue" posse, or the Book of the Dead immortals like Richard Alpert and Jacob) are attempting to manipulate their lives through a cyclical process that involves sending the dead back in time from some point in the future which we've yet to see in attempts to change their fates, and therefore prevent the destruction of mankind.
On a side note, I think that a band of psychic feral children that live underground control the smoke monster with their collective minds.
