I don't know if anyone else has posted a similar theory, but here goes. When Sun and Lapidus get back to the main island in the Namaste episode. They encounter a bombed out Dharma compound and an eager Christian Shepherd. I have heard speculation that Sun and Lapidus also traveled through time, but are currently somewhere between 1977 and some other indeterminate point. I disagree with this, and I think that they are in present time in this bombed out compound.
Think of Christian Shepherd as the ghost of Christmas future from Dicken's A Christmas Carol. He is showing Sun and Frank what will happen if they don't act, and what will happen is that Ben will die, and so will all of their friends.
Ben is the key here. In the last episode a young Ben met Sayid, and an older Ben removed a sling from his arm and then was whacked in the head with a paddle. In The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham present day Ben is seen in an infirmary not looking so good. It did not look like he had simply suffered a knock out blow from a canoe paddle.
Perhaps Sayid decides to end Ben's reign before it can begin, and tries to kill the young Ben. If he succeeds then Ben never becomes an official member of the Others, and when the truce is eventually broken, and everybody is pretty sure it will be, the Others will show no compassion to the Dharma people. The result would be no Ben, no Amy, no Ethan spared and more importantly no need to live in Dharma town. The Others seemed to get along fine for years before the Initiative brought in modern amenities, and without Ben to tell them otherwise, the Others probably could continue to live without such amenities.
In present day the death of a young Ben would probably wreck havoc with the constitution of a modern Ben which would explain his presence in the infirmary.
This is my first post so please go easy. Theory by robmo35
