The Orchid Station/The Frozen Wheel/The Well-
a. The Wheel was turned at least 4 times that we know of: 1) The time the Polar bear was sent to Tunisia 2) The time Ben tricked Widmore into turning it and exiling him from the island 3) The time Ben turned it after Christian Shepard told Locke to move the island 4) When Locke turned it to go visit the Oceanic 6.
b. The wheel controls some elements of time and space. It transports anyone in close proximity to it to a different time (so far we have seen it transport Ben and Locke into the future) and to a location in Tunisia.
c. The Dharma Initiative wanted to harness the power of the wheel in order to do experiments on teleportation and time travel, so they built the Orchid Station over the location on the wheel.
d. We have seen the location of the wheel in a couple different time periods: 1) Ancient times-Sawyer holding the rope that led down the well, but the well was not there at the time of the 4-Toed Statue 2) The well was there at the time Locke went down it, so the well existed before the Orchid Station was built 3) 1974-Where Sawyer, Juliet etc. landed after Locke turned the wheel-the well was there but it was filled in and collapsed 4) We did see a glimpse of the New Orchid Station when Sawyer and Locke first went to find it, but then a flash happened and there was just the well 5) Somewhere after 1974 when Dr. Pierre Change was called to see the ex-ray of the interior of where they were constructing the Orchid and he saw the Wheel, and Faraday was working on building the Orchid 6) End of 2004 when Locke and Ben went to the Orchid and it was crumbling and disused and Ben when in and entered the Wheel Chamber by blowing a hole in the Dharma time travel/teleportation unit.
Theories: So what does this tell us. The wheel was not made by Dharma. It existed before them and was accessed by a well. How did the early inhabitants stumble on to the location? My theory is because a time traveling Sawyer was holding the rope when he traveled to ancient times and the rope was left hanging out of the ground after the flashed out of there. The curious natives dug the well to see where the rope led. I have a feeling that the natives respect the magical nature of the island and did not mess with the powers but just worshiped the island and believed that the magical healing properties of the island were a gift from their gods. It is possible that the natives were unnaturally healthy and grew to a certain age, but then their aging stopped and they lived eternally (Richard Alpert) It was not until The Black Rock landed on the island and the survivors of the crash started poking around, because they saw that the natives did not age and that their wounds healed an! d wanted to find the source of this so that they could take advantage of it themselves. They warred with the natives slaughtering many of them, and the rest took refuge at their temple, where the prayed to their gods to send them a savior, something or someone who would protect them from the slave drivers of the Black Rock. (Maybe offering to the gods a sacrifice, a man named Jacob, a man who the island showed great favor to and healed from a major disability, a man who had murdered his father because his father was a cruel sinner ). And their gods answers them with the smoke monster. After the smoke monster killed the Black Rock people, the Natives came out of hiding and lived peaceably, but with also a great distrust of outsiders. They destroyed the well that was built into the chamber of the wheel. And lived alone for many years. Any outsiders that happened to find the island were instantly distrusted. But being a good people, they would learn about the outsiders and inc! orporate the ones that seemed likely to embrace their society ! and live by their rules (or the good people). Meanwhile, all of those years passed and the worshiped Jacob for his sacrifices and believed that someday the spirit of Jacob would be reincarnated to offer them further salvation. This reincarnated spirit will be their leader and usher in a new age of favor from the gods where eternal life once again will be granted to their descendants. In the 1950’s the British and US governments found the island and wanted to use it for testing weaponry like the Hydrogen and Atomic Bomb. The natives fought them off with the help of a few soldiers who turned on their own military and aided the natives (Widmore and Ellie etc). Widmore eventually became leader of the natives. Then in the 1970’s The Dharma Initiative, an outgrowth of the Hanso Corporation came to the island. The natives rebelled and fought the Dharma people, but eventually came to a truce. But then one of the Dharma experiment went wrong, causing a horrible incident. This incident re! newed the natives (who dharma referred to as hostiles) interest in taking down the Dharma Initiative which led to their inside man Ben Linus, killing all of the Dharma Initiative and liberating the natives. Many of the natives believed that Ben could be the reincarnation of Jacob since he killed his father and stopped Dharma but Widmore still held control, so Ben tricked him into turning the wheel to get rid of him.
The Natives went back to living a peaceable life, and blackmailed the Hanso Foundation to make them leave them alone and to continue to drop food and supplies on the island, because they had control over the ultimate weapon. The power of the Swan Station/ the Hatch. The Hanso Foundation new if the button was pushed every 108 minutes it could destroy the world, so they obeyed. But after the Swan was destroyed by Desmond turning the failsafe key, that was no longer a threat. So Widmore who, after being exiled from the island joined forces with the Hanso Foundation in order to cooperate and get them both back on the island, hired a team of mercenaries to take out Ben so that they could reinstate Widmore as leader of the natives and he would make them allow the Dharma Initiative to resume their experiments of the island
Meanwhile, you had the crash of Flight 815, which stranded out castaways on the island and John Locke was healed by the island. Many started to believe that he was the reincarnation of Jacob, he had to kill his father to prove it (which he had Sawyer do). So the natives wanted Locke as their leader and Ben tried to kill him to prevent it, but eventually let it happen and left the island. But I believe that Ben knew that he would return. I believe he knew that there was going to be another plane that crashed on the island 3 years after the 815 crash. I believe he knows this because of his experience with Jack, Kate, Sayid etc. when he was a boy in 1977. That is why he had Sawyer and Kate building a runway of the Hydra Island back in season 3. When he left the island he knew there was a way back, and that he would come back and regain his power over is people. Which is what he is trying to do now.Theory by DharmaDave
