I know I know you guys are sick of theories about this but I promise this will be worth the read. What if whatever is happening right now, is what "happened"? That is to say, the Losties can do whatever they want, but the past will be whatever they choose to do. There are no alternate timelines according to the powers that be....the losties must be really in 1977. I think that Faraday will come clean about all of this when he is reintroduced, and moreover I think he's been spending his time with the hostiles.
Now suppose you were alive in 1977, and you knew there were going to be people traveling back in time at some point. Wouldn't you try to influence those people so they would change the past in a way that's beneficial to you? I think this is what Widmore is doing, and what Ben and Hawking (as a team) are doing. I think these people were the only ones left alive who know about the losties after either the incident or the purge. I have posted elswhere that I think Widmore and Ben are each others constants, and that is why they haven't just killed each other.
I think they each realized that they would be trying to change the past, and developed a set of rules about things that just couldn't be changed (can't hurt each other's family etc), which prompts Ben's comment when Alex is killed; he knows the past has been changed in such a way that his daughter is killed by Widmore's men. Now, the losties will realize this as well, and if they aren't returned to their own time, they will have to avoid changing the future.
Or will they? I think that Faraday will explain to the losties that they have to make sure they are all on flight 815, or they will never go back in time to begin with. Its the grandfather paradox; if you go back in time and kill your grandfather, you won't be born, so you'll never go back in time to kill your grandfather...except backwards. The losties will have to make sure that the proper people end up going back in time, possibly by arranging flight 815 themselves! They would know exactly how; who to talk to and what to say to set up getting their past selves onto flight 815.
I think that Ben and Widmore are both involved in a power struggle to try to change the past. Since apparently Ben can't go back to the 70s with the losties, I think he has tried to arrange things prior to flight 316 such that hopefully the past will be changed. There is another party here: Pierre Chang and Faraday, who send a transmission to the future where Chang urges people to try to change the past before Faraday cuts him off.
Where has faraday been? I think that he realized that the losties and himself must go back in time or there will be dire consequences (god help us all), and realizes that in order for them to find the well, charlotte has to die. She didn't remember until she had been flashed basically to death. I think he's so distraught because he knows he can't save Charlotte or he could jeopardize all of space/time.
I think that Ben and Widmore were both trying to stay on the Island until the time travelers arrived (perhaps not knowing when exactly they would?). Ben at some point tricks Widmore into moving the Island so that Widmore can't try to change the past. I think that Ben has been manipulating everyone so that when they do go back in time the end result will be beneficial to him. I definitely don't think he was expecting to go back, he wouldn't bother building a runway for other people he doesn't care about.
My theory on the end of the series is that after the incident the losties will either: be returned to their own time or, realize that they can change the future and devote their lives to making sure that flight 815 happens exactly as it is supposed to. It is the ultimate combination of fate and free will; the losties in the 70s can choose what to do, but it will have already happened as soon as they choose to do it. We've already seen 2004, and it will happen again. The flight 316ers will set up flight 815, but then again, they did the first time. The series will end with the losties getting on flight 815, and then the 316ers all parting ways to (finally) continue living their lives. "The Circle" was the original name for "Lost".
