So the rules of Lost state that whatever happened, happened. This has been drilled into us the whole season. The exception, however, is Desmond. If he can defy the rules of the show, I think we should be looking at everything Desmond has done. The O6 were not supposed to leave the island but because of Desmond, they did. He had the power to change what happens. He prolonged Charlie's death long enough to make contact with Penny and thus leading to the O6 getting off the island.
He was also responsible for bringing 815 down in the first place. It could be argued that turning the failsafe key gave him the ability the change things and so him crashing the plane was meant to happen.
That is most likely the case and I doubt he was changing anything by pressing the button late.
Another thought I had was whether or not Desmond had a hand in Jin surviving the explosion. By Ben's reaction to the news about Jin's survival, Jin was supposed to die and Ben knew it. Shortly before the freighter explosion, Desmond was with Jin trying to disable the bomb. His interaction with Jin may have led to a change where Jin made it out alive.
I also think that Widmore led Desmond to the island by getting him into the boat race and was using him to change something and overthrow Ben. I know im reaching here, but maybe Desmond's interactions with the losties and the freighter crew led to Alex's death and Desmond was Widmore's tool to "change the rules."
It is now believed from Sun and Lapidus's visit to the barracks that the losties changed something in the past. My theory is that when Ben was bloody at the marina, he had just killed Penny, and this leads Desmond back to the island in search of revenge. His return may lead him to Dharma time with the the rest of the losties and he uses his ability and changes something.
