I think the Incident affected Smokey and made him more of the attacking machine that we have seen.
Here are my thought on this theory.
This has always been a question of mine, how did the DI build their stations without constantly getting attacked by the Smoke Monster?
What if, when the DI first got to the island Smokey was more docile and maybe just an information collector. I mean I really don't think smokey would want all of these stations, especially the swan being put on the island.
I think Smokey had a vested interest in the Electromagnetic energy that the Swan tapped into. Take a look at the blast door map and see that there are 3 Cerberus Vents near the swan... http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage-1024-529.html I think Smokey's Lair may be very near where the Swan was located...
I think that Smokey was docile and the Incident made him go haywire and cause a lot of havoc for the DI and the Natives.
A couple of notes on the blast door are also interesting...
Or possible catastrophic malfunction of Cerberus System
Multiple escape conducts blocked after incident
Possible CV II - inactive since accident
Primary nexus of Cerberus related activity
Now if smokey started attacking after the incident wouldn't the DI want to stay protected behind the sonic fence?
Things to back up the claim of Smokey and the Incident...
1) It appears that no more recruits were brought to the island after the incident - Hence Christian only reading up to 1979 on the wall of recruit pictures.
2) The Food drops - This would be cause to have the food drops, since the main dock would be out of the range of the sonic fence and it would be unsafe for new recruits and supplies to come in from the water.
3) The Processing center is abandoned, I think the DI left the processing Center since Smokey now was on the prowl. Smokey could have also attacked the Arrow and caused it to be abbandoned.
I first thought that the Processing center was part of the barracks, But look at this picture from Season 3 - http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage-1163-89.html I don't think you would be able to see the Ocean (but I also don't see the sonic fence or the 2nd dock and body of water)
Now look at this picture from Namaste at the Processing Center - http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage-1475-342.html - You can see the Ocean in the background.
4) The earliest we have seen smokey in attack mode or at all is 1988 with the expedition team. I'm waiting to see a Smoke Monster appearance in DHARMA days :)
