Richard vs Juliette vs Ben...Sub..Charles...Let's say a mix of 10001010 in my head.
I want to start with his first appearance. Not in Portland. Richard. We first saw him when he came to recruit Juliette. He was introduced to us as doctor Alpert. Later they called him mister Alpert. So who is he? What does he do? Who is he? Well that s one of the biggest secrets of Lost. Saw he came with Ethan (who was working with Juliette in the same building) he already knew who Juliette is. When we look at it now. It is so much fun. We do not know that yet but it is possible that he will learn soon about her existence back in the 70s cause as far as we saw she was the only person he didn’t meet yet. He kept Miles, Daniel and Charlotte prisoners. Then Locke came to his camp and disappeared. 20 years later Sawyer killed his two men and gave him some info on Locke. So the only person he actually never met from our little group is Juliette. Coincidence? Something is telling me he will meet her soon. If he ! doesn’t he will find out about her eventually. If anything from Ben. He recruited her for two reasons. One is because the women on the island were dying and second because Ben told him to. And Ben wants Juliette near him. Richard once said that Ben was wasting their time with fertility problems. Yet that was the only reason for keeping her there with them. The only reason she came. At first I believe Richard thought it was a good idea. Juliette can come in handy if she is truly special. Later on we saw the background of the whole story. It was not as much the fertility problems she was there for . The reality is much different. Ben is the main reason and his crash. When we think of crush…well it is not something that we would take serious. But it is Ben who has a crush and we saw what he is capable of when he wants someone. In this case Juliette. I know I am of course here but I need to say what is on my mind cause my thoughts are just coming and coming. So Ben had a! crush on Juliette even before she came. Cause he met her befo! re. Yes. He sees mother figure in her. Ben is deranged man. I know a lot of people love him. I do to. He is great character. But still….he is damaged goods. Like most of them. Like Kate, Sayid, Locke, Sawyer, Jack etc. Ben is the same. He suffered most of his life. His childhood was not happy. Far from it. He put up with his drunk father who insulted him every time he had a chance. So I do not blame him. Then the light came into his life. In a form of Juliette. Again the 70s. So as a kid it means a lot. He needed love and attention and whoever is about to give him what he needs he will (it is so hard to explain it in English, my vocabulary is not as big as it is in my mother tongue, damn) be drawn to that person forever. And he will always need attention of that person. In this case we know it is Juliette. And when he realized she has a relationship with Goodwin he sent him directly to death and then he took her to show her. To make her suffer as much as he suffers because of h! er. And he wanted to show her what he is capable of to keep her by his side. He wanted to show her she is his and that there is no escape. So once again, a crush? No. Complex. Can you imagine a grown man acting that way? I cannot. Cause I never saw that type of man. I would dare to say that is something that a boy could do. When you look at Ben he is a grown man. But inside he is a troubled boy. Bitter, possessive boy. And you know how mean kids can be. That first came to my mind (well not the first but the first time I saw it clear) when he killed John and the way he acted on the way out. Just look at his face. That is not an expression of a man who just killed someone it is a face of a boy who will actually miss John. He feels guilty but he knew there is no other way. He got use to John and he maybe even liked him. Their relationship was weird yet appealing. I love their scenes together. So those are the reasons for Juliette’s presence on the island. Richard. He kn! ows about her? Well we will have to wait. Something strange ha! ppened t here. She said goodbye to her sister Rachel (that reminded me of Jacob, Rachel was his wife, and this Rachel gave a birth to a boy Julian, yet this Rachel was dying from cancer and was sterile but ok, I just found it cool) she got up to that white van and next thing we saw was airport. Airport? Aren’t they taking a sub to the island? Why airport? And when will they change their ride? Where? She drunk that orange juice (people are comparing this to the same juice that Jack and Kate drunk on their plane, is it the same thing?) next thing we saw she was in Galaga on the island. So maybe the sub is not the only means of transportation. Where are they flying to from USA? Where is that sub? Tahiti? (Horace said that sub can take Sawyer and the rest to Tahiti and from there he could find his way home. Danielle and her team came from Tahiti to the island in 1988.) So can Tahiti be the point where the sub is waiting for next passengers? And how can a ride in a plane or a sub be ! bumpy the way Ethan described it? What it is that they are hiding? I mean there is no turning back. The minute she woke up and climbed up she knew she is on the island and not in Portland. What difference does it make if she is awake or asleep during her trip? I think she wasn’t traveling by sub. The only people who traveled that way were DHARMA members. The Others never used that sub. Why would Ben just let John blew up the sub? How was he going to go off the island. They need to go off eventually. He made John believe they actually use that sub. The others played along cause Tom earlier said that since the sky turned purple they lost their communication with the outside world. And that they couldn’t get off. Then how come Jack could go. And do you really believe Ben would just let her go. I don’t believe that. But in the case the sub was working he had John as his wild card. But never mind I believe Juliette was brought by plane or some other way, remember that is ! privileged information. Richard never had a sub, well at least! not bef ore DI came and to me Richard doesn’t look like he is traveling by sub. I know it is stupid to say that. But something tells me he can teleport himself. Why would I say something like this? Well it is Lost. Everything pops out inside my brain. But yes few things led me to this conclusion. One was in the episode Man from Tallahassee. Locke was in Bens closet holding gun to Alex head.
Ben: I want you to bring me the man from Tallahassee.
Richard: What do you need him for?

How come he was so fast? It took him half an hour. Was Anthony there all along? I don’t think so. Why? Because Anthony said he was driving a car when he got in car accident and there was an ambulance and one of the paramedic even smiled at him before everything turned black and the next thing he woke up in this room and his dead son opened the door. Anthony seemed afraid. Confused. He wouldn’t act that way if he was kept there for days. He thought he was in hell because first thing he saw after he woke up was his ‘dead’ son. I don’t know to me it looked like Richard got off the island and came back with Cooper in split second. That would explain his thing with the sonic fence too. But it is kind of ridiculous. I hope there is some other explanation, more intriguing than teleportation.
The more I think about Richard the more I get confused. What can I say about him? We know he doesn’t age. Well that depends on perspective. Maybe he doesn’t and maybe he does. We will find out soon. I hope. But there are 3 possible explanations I can think of now. One is that he is immortal and never ages or ages but rather slow. The second is that he is time traveler. So let’s say he is born in 1960. And he is like 34 years old in 2004. So that is his point in time where he looks like he looks. So from 2004 he can jump wherever he wants. He can jump back to 1954 and look 34 or he want jump back to 1977 and look 34 or he can go to the future in 2054 and look 34 years old. But he is born in 1960. And the point from where he is jumping is 2004. Get me? OK. The third possible solution is that Richard is dead. And he got resurrected. Locke style. So he is a form of undead. And he can appear in any time anywhere like Christian . Yes it can be any of these. But now I wil! l tell you what I think.
If he is immortal. Then we need to set some rules. What does it means? That he cannot die? Or he can but if he is shot, strangled or gassed he can? Eternal life. This can be true but only if he can be killed.
Time jumps are also possible. But he seemed surprised when Locke told him about his time jumps. Was that the first time Richard found out about time traveling? Probably. Why else would he go to visit little Locke being born. Or maybe he lied. How did he travel before sub? He must’ve known about some island secrets, then why not time traveling? And what is that privileged information?
If he is dead and got resurrected..then why the hell would he put on the gas mask during the purge???
He is dead. He cant die more than once. Then why the mask? So I will rule that possibility out. It sucked anyway. I wanted it to be something better than that. But then again if he got resurrected what does it mean? That he is human again and can be killed? I am confused. They need to do an episode with rules for all the things they put so far!
I don’t want to believe he is an Egyptian god or something like that. This show doesn’t go in that direction as far as I see it. That would be just lame. God. No no…hope not. A wizard. Well I can live with that. Maybe. It would be cool if he is time traveler or they know how to teleport. I mean it always comes together. You should be able to teleport if you can travel back or further in time.
Or he could be a smoke monster. Oh I would like that one. Shape shifter. Yes they said that the monster cannot pass that fence but hm. WRONG! If Ben has this device under his house that can summon the black smoke then anything is possible. I mean we never saw that one coming, right. Now I am thinking about something someone said about the relationship between them. Ben and Richard. It was said that the two of them are controlling each other. So Richard controls Ben cause he is the one who selects a new leader and if he thinks Ben is finished then Ben is finished. We saw that when Richard gave Locke the file on Sawyer. So Ben needs to be careful.
But how does Ben control Richard? By this little device he has in his basement ? Could be. Could be. I cannot think of any other way cause we were never hinted that someone else was ‘adviser’ for the Others than Richard. Never was. Never will be. So how can Ben control him? With what?
But Juliette said that smokey doesn’t like their fences. Well Juliette said lots of things. She told Kate they left her behind. She lied. And like she is gonna say: Kate, don’t be afraid it is just Richard! I Don’t thinks so. But I don’t think that Juliette knows. The only person who knows is Ben and perhaps Widmore family. That’s why Richard was very thrilled when he saw little Johns drawing on the wall. Richard is old. He protects the island. He always looks the same. He was never around when Smoke was there. Smokey protects the island. Is there like since forever. Well at least he was there in the 60s. Richard knew about it when he saw the drawing. And as far as I can say those are the same years we saw Richard first (in time 50s, 60s…this English is killing me. I don’t know how to say ‘point way back in time’ with just one word the way I can say it in my language!) Smoke always looks the same. Heh. I don’t know. But this would be really awesome! Bu! t lets not jump to conclusions. (I will think about it some more cause this came out of nowhere).
The next question is something that really bothers me. How come Locke didn’t recognize Charles? Ben showed him a tape where Charles is very brutal with unlucky Other. His face was clear. He even looked at camera. And we are talking about the man who sent the freighter filled with Rambo guys to ‘kill’ them. (I don’t believe that was an order, I believe Keamy was acting himself and he was the one who wanted to kill them all because…well we all saw him. I tend to believe Charles Widmore is not as bad as Ben is saying. I have a crush on Widmore so it’s probably that. That’s the main reason I am defending him all these months :) But yes other than that I really think there are some facts that could prove him being eventually OK). So in that point when they are fighting for their lives…Ben showed him a man who wants them all dead. And few days later when Locke sees him, he has no idea who the man is? No, something is not right here. Is there something more to it? S! omething we missed?

So what was my point? My point was that Juliette was kept just because of Ben and that in time she will become the reason for him loosing everything he had. Juliette and Locke off course. My point was to show what is Ben like when he sees he is loosing something he wants and care for. What he is capable of in order to keep that. (maybe he lost Annie and he was on vendetta against DI)That’s for all of you who still think that he is one of the good guys. I wanted to point out that sub is useless. That they traveled in different matter. Because only some of them were allowed to go off the island. Why? If there is a sub they are all using? And Ben said that the sub is an illsuion for his people, just to make them believe they can go home whenever they want. But the truth is they cant! So most of the Others never left the island since they came. I wanted to show that Juliette came via something else, not known to her or us. My point was that Jack was never gonna leave (via sub! that doesn’t work) the island. Ben just tricked him. Like everyone else. And he wanted to make John and Jack enemies. Divide and rule. That was his agenda from the very beginning, in the hatch, if you remember his little games? The sub hasn’t been used since Dharma time like most of the things from Dharma days (useless now) it is there just for the show. My point is that Richard travels STAR TREK way(maybe they have a device somewhere on the island similar to FDW, who knows?). And that is the privileged information and that maybe he could end up being a Smoke Monster, and I would really like that one. And I wanted someone to help me out with the answer Why John didn’t recognize Charles in TLADOJB?
