This started as a comment to another post, but I got carried away and decided to turn it into a theory of its own.
OK so obviously, Radzinsky designed the Swan station. From what we know of LOST, it seems obvious what happened (or what will happen). They start working on the Swan station in territory controlled by the Hostiles. Radzinsky has surveyed that land and found that there are some interesting anomalies in this location, which turns out being the same location where Richard and Widmore and Co decided to bury the Jughead back in 1954. Perhaps the Jughead is responsible for some of the anomalies.
While digging earth to build the Swan, the DI taps into a pocket of energy that combines with the radiation of the jughead and chaos occurs. Magnetic energy is pulling all of the metal work equipment violently at the pocket of earth. Pierre Chang is there and a piece of flying debris takes off one of his arms. The workers try frantically to plug the hole with cement and metal. This is known as the Incident. The hole gets plugged, but now the Swan station has a whole new reason to exist: to discharge the energy build up that was created in the act of building the Swan station. With all of the metal used to design the Swan, they created a huge capacitor that must be discharged every 108 minutes so prevent an out-of-control magnetic force.
Radzinsky is the one who designed the station, so he is pretty much responsible for it, thus the DI leave him behind to be the button pusher. It is his punishment for what has occurred. Well, as the years go on, Radzinsky is in the Swan and was protected from the purge. He stays down there for about 20 years, and becomes quite crazy. He occupies his mind by drawing up the blast door map, or at least part of it. Somehow Kevin Inman makes his way to the island, and finds Radzinsky and the Swan and is convinced to join him in the button pushing and blast door map drawing. Radzinsky now has someone to take over, so he kills himself to get away from the madness that the Swan has caused. Perhaps the electromagnetic fields helps to accelerate the madness.
