On this theory I am not certain at all, at least not as certain as I am about the "Whatever happened, didn't happen" theory.
This theory is predicated on the idea that the "whatever happened, happened" theory is a long con perpetrated by the producers and writers so that the major plot twists that are to come will have more impact.
It has been accepted by the people who have bitten on the "whatever happened, happened" theory hook that since Ethan was born in 1977 at the Dharma barracks, that Ethan, sometime before the purge, becomes an "Other".
I submit that it is more likely that Ethan became an Other in the Other timeline because Ethan's mother was kidnapped by Others when her husband was killed. It is evident that the hostiles had no intention of killing Amy because they just shot her husband, but they put a bag over her head. She was being kidnapped, probably because her name was on some list. In this altered timeline however, Sawyer prevents Amy from being kidnapped when he saves her and shoots the two hostiles who were kidnapping her.
In timeline 1, Ethan is born of Amy as an Other and is raised as an Other. In this view, Amy is likely the "Amelia" who we see at the book club meeting with Juliet.
In timeline 2, Ethan is born of Amy as a Dharmaite and lives in the Barracks with his mother.
As I said, this is speculation that would explain how Ethan used to be (or became) an Other, or, should we say... the Other Ethan.
But, that is just what I think,
