The Island - a mystical Island with amazing properties that is semi-sentient. Those individuals who come into contact with it either; commune with it and shut themselves off from the rest of the world in a mini utopia – or they wish to manipulate its properties to save the world... Read More……or control it.
The distant past - Magnus Hanso’s ( Who I think Richard really is) ship gets beached on the island in the 1800’s and he and his crew encounter the Island and its inhabitants. Maybe they are descendants of a special race of humans that are part of the island, maybe not, but somehow word gets back to the “real” world about this Island and its properties. The relatives of the Hanso family keep the secret until Olivar Hanso suggests it as the site for the Dharma research.
It just so happens that Widmore was banished from the Island or left it to make use of it by using its properties for real world applications... or domination.
What ever he left the Island with, it helped him become very rich. And he hooked up with Hanso and he agreed to fund the Dharma initiative to “save the world... Read More”. We always think saving the world is a “good” thing. But what if saving the world from overpopulation meant infecting tens of millions of Africans with HIV so that enough people would die? Sounds nuts but all I am saving is chopping off a foot to save a body has be done before!
So whether saving the world was good or bad, that’s what they set out to do. The backed the Dergroots research and created experiments to do several things. Master time travel, reintroduce wild life into new environments, study special powers some humans have, and test various utopian and dystopian concepts for rebuilding society after the “end of the world”. They went back to the island knowing the “others” would be there and that the others would challenge what they were doing.
The island itself seemed to work against Dharma as well. It slowly corrupted everything they tried to do. It made people sick, babies could not be conceived, and the harmless smoke monster was turned into a killer – I think it was a Dharma creation intended to just spook the people in the various Dharma stations not to come into contact with the other stations so that the research would not be tainted. But the island made it a semi controllable killer.
When Ben killed every one off in the purge, he joined the others. I think the island’s small population has only been replenished over the years by people being tricked into coming or crashing on purpose or accident.
The others just want to live in peace on the island, they may even know about the end of the world. But their Jonestown type dedication must mean that there is some spiritual force so strong that they never want to leave and will protect against the defiling of the Island, even at the cost of the end of the rest of the world.
The fight that is on now, is between two groups essentially, Widmore/Hanso that want to either save the world or rule it using the island, and the others and their extensive real world network. The losties are caught in the middle. I think our concepts of Good and Bad will be challenged in this show because both sides of the war have resulted to murder, cruelty, and manipulation to achieve their means.
Jacob – is the spiritual force of the island, probably a human whose spirit or ghost has fully bonded with the island. He wants to protect himself at all costs. Whether the island is good or bad is up for debate. Theory by Araia1906
