Hey all,
This is my first time, so let me know if I'm doing anything wrong. :)
So I've been thinking a lot about the implications of the Losties now being stuck in the 1970's (besides Locke, Ben, Sun?, and Frank thus far). And I can't stop thinking about how much they know compared to everyone else.
I keep going back to the conversation that Sawyer had with Richard, and how Sawyer must have freaked Richard out about knowing about "jughead", and mentioning his faithful waiting for "John Locke." The losties definitely have the upper hand now. They've experienced a ton of the "future", they've explored some of the past (which Richard's experienced already), and now they're living amidst Dharma.
I still believe that there's some sort of "incident" that will occur at some point (although I must admit that I highly doubt that there's some sort of time loop that's ever changing and also eternally going on--but that's just me). Like Daniel stated a few times now, "What's happened, has already happened" (my paraphrasing). Thus, this 1970's past has already happened, and nothing can be changed (unless the exception to the rule shows up--Desmond).
If you're still tracking with me, here's what I'm thinking...
1. Losties know a lot more than most now in the 1970's
2. This past that they're in had already happened when they reached the island the "first time" (the crash due to Desmond not turning the key in time)
I would then wager to guess that:
3. The Losties will get to know young Ben whenever he shows up to the island.
Therefore... In the future, when the Losties "first" arrive to the island, Ben knows about it--because everything that's going on right now in the show in the 1970's had already happened.
So here's what I'm thinking: Ben already knew most of what would happen, BECAUSE the losties form some sort of relationship with him and TELL him everything. They tell him their details, and how he was captured at one point, and how Michael was integral to his escape, and how some made it off the island, etc.
I don't know why they're going to do this... But I'm guessing that it has something to do with the "incident." Somehow, maybe through Desmond or maybe through some other means, the Losties will realize what's truly at stake (which will be a lot), and they'll get Ben to do everything that he's been doing for the past 5 seasons.
So there is sort of a time loop, but it's not never-ending. Rather, it's simply this:
1. Ben fulfills his role by messing with the Losties when they first crash land. Losties are confused as hell.
2. Losties go to 1970's, and teach Ben what he needs to know in order to mess with them when in 30 or so years.
3. Ben and Losties meet up again AFTER all this for the incident. This is somewhere in the early 2000's. Anytime after Ben is now, which means that the Losties will have to find a way to get to him (which they'll have to do anyway if Sun and Jin will ever be reunited).
