John Locke made his own luck when he said to Richard in 195? that he is the leader, and showed himself powerful telling Richard about his birth that would occur in the future. Since then, the others represented by Richard and Widmore are waiting for John Lock to be in charge. I am sure that Richard and Widmore think that Locke is the saviour (remember Sawyer, as soon as he came to DI telling Richard, who did not recognize him, that he was waiting for John Locke to come back...! If I were Richard I would think Lock is God...) But the exact time for John Locke to assume his post is 2004, that is why Widmore "sent" Locke to the island. Why 2004? Because this is when Oceanics came. Ben Linus is waiting for all of them (the ones who were living at DI in 1974-1977 that he had already knew as a child), but he is not counting that the Other`s leader (post assumed by Ben after the purge), is in that flight (Locke, who app! arently has not run into little Ben back in the seventies). Why not? Because Ben did not meet Locke before, because while Sawyer and company are in 1977, John Lock is in 2007. Young Ben have never found Locke in the past that is why he is so important and Ben is so afraid of him.
Ben realized that Locke is really powerful and tried to kill him, to assume Locke`s post turning the wheel, trying anything to continue to be the leader.
When outside the Island, Ben realized that Locke is also there trying to gather all the Oceanics to send them back to island, so Ben gets mad as he thinks he is the "chosen" do to this job, not Locke. Only after knowing the plans from Locke (about Hawkings), Ben killed him. That`s why John dies, I mean, because Ben`s obsession in being the leader, never would let Jonh alive, even more, send the Oceanics back to the Island. Once Ben was outside, and it was Locke who was supposed to bring them back, Ben could not allow this to happen, the way to do this: killing Locke. We can observe that only after Ben kills John that Hawkings said that the same conditions of the earlier flight should be simulated. Why did she say that? Because this is the only way to send Locke back to Island. It was fake, only believing in this Ben would permit Locke body to get in the plane (pretending to be dead Christian...). In my opinion, the only reason Christian is dead in flight 815 is to give Locke! the chance to return (as he will be dead) on the Aljira flight seducing Ben with the lie.
So, Locke is back to "his" island as powerful as ever, first he could walk, now he can live again and help his people. I am sure that Ben is not expecting to see John alive... and in my opinion this is the time for Locke to play his role, maybe with Sun`s help.
Locke as the motivation: the Other are waiting for his leader since 1952, when Locke said he is the one. Ben must have grown up hearing Richard and Widmore talking about the return of the real leader, and Ben thought was he, and did everything necessary to assume this post (the purge and exile Widmore).
The save: because he said he is the one (with faith) things (in time and space) will favor this happening
