So now, as of the latest episode, we have Sawyer, Juliet, Miles, Faraday, Jin, Kate, Hurley, and Jack in the 1970's with the Dharma Initiative. (And I think Sayid is there too.) And it appears that Locke, Caesar, Llana, Ben, Lapidus, and Sun are all in the present day. So why did Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid flash out of the plane without everyone else? Back to that later.
The rules of time travel have been firmly established in the series. And through the laws of time travel, it can be said that since all of the other characters went back to the 70's, that's the way it has always been. Those characters were ALWAYS meant to go to the 70's with The Dharma Initiative because that is ALWAYS the way it happened. So Richard, Ben, and possibly a few others should have memories of them.
It has also been established that the rules of time travel, for some reason, don't take hold with Desmond. For some reason, he is "special," and there is a possibility that he can change things. He was one of the only people on the freighter at the beginning of season 4, and we know he is definitely partly responsible for getting the oceanic six off the island. Well what if they were never supposed to leave the island? What if, in past cycles, they never did get off the island, but in this cycle, Desmond changed that? So the Oceanic six get off the island, and they are told that they HAVE to go back. And if they don't go back, terrible things will happen. The reason for this is goes back to the fact that they were never supposed to leave in the first place. They were always supposed to be with Sawyer and his group. They were always supposed to go back to the 1970s to be in the DI time period. If all of them don't return, history will not happen the way its supposed! to.
So the Oceanic 6 return on the plane, and even though the flashes are supposed to be over, they are flashed from the plane because they are SUPPOSED to be in the 1970s, because that's how it always happened. Its destiny. They were basically (forgive this analogy) downloaded from the plane, because when they pass into the island's radius, things go back to the way they are supposed to be, with them in the 1970s.
The rest is pure conjecture, so don't rate my theory based on it.
I think that the reason everyone else wasn't (again, forgive this) "downloaded" was because they were never supposed to make it back to the 1970s. Possibly, Sun might have been supposed to die on the island. (Maybe an early attack of the sickness caused by her pregnancy.)
It hasn't been established why the others don't time travel, but if, perhaps, Ben doesn't either, he wouldn't have gone back in time either. Some people think that the temple protects from time travel. Juliet has never been there, and we know Ben has, so that would make sense.
Locke is dead on the plane, so he wouldn't have been taken back in time anyway. (in theory.) But he was ALWAYS supposed to move the island. Jacob said that Ben SPECIFICALLY was meant to move it, not Locke. So Locke would have moved the island, and most likely would have never returned, if the oceanic 6 hadn't left.
That leaves Lapidus. Let's also theorize that Lapidus was meant to die as well. So these 4, plus Caesar, Llana, and the other survivors, all land in the current time period, since they weren't supposed to go back to the 1970s, since they were never there. When desmond arrives, he most likely will also be in the current period timeline. But that might be wrong.
So now, course correction has taken place, correcting what Desmond changed when he got people on the freighter. (Remember all the obstacles they faced when getting on the helicopter and the freighter. Its because course correction was trying to take hold and stop them from leaving. that also explains why Jin never died. He was never supposed to, because he goes back in time to the Dharma Initiative.) Anyway, course correction has finally taken place, and everyone who was SUPPOSED to go back in time originally to the 1970s now has.
So remember in season 2 when Ben ordered Michael to bring sawyer, hurley, Jack, and Kate to him? there's a chance that its because those are the people he interacted with back in the 70s. thats how he knows so much about them.
There are many more places where this theory can go. but I'm going to leave it here for now, because anything else would only be pure conjecture with absolutely no proof. Theory by Charles Hume
