Ok, so here it is. I've been racking my brain for so long as to how everyone seems to be connected to Mrs Hawking. Most interesting is that both Widmore and Ben seem to have connection with her. Why is she on both teams here, a double agent perhaps? Also, why were her and Jack secretive at the church giving the impression that Ben was not supposed to be "in-the-know" on the John Locke proxy body. And then it dawned on me...
What if, just like Joe Pesci in Casino, that the made-men are just tired of Ben's antics and are "whacking" him, in an Other's sense. Ok mafia terms aside, they are not really killing him, but they are outing him from the club. And Ben is one tricky guy, who is well known for always having a plan and getting his way. So this long con by the conglomerate of the Others: Hawking, Widmore, the medium from Austrailia, the Others around the city (Tom, Jill, etc...), they all want Ben gone, forever. He's strayed from their original agenda of... (read below, they aren't just protecting the island, there's more) Ben is just looking out for Ben. They thought he was special, but he wasn't. They made a bad choice hiring him for the job as leader, and now they want him gone.
Hawking tells Ben that all the Oceanic 6 has to go back to the island. She knows it will be in the 1970's because the Lamppost clearly reveals "when" the island will be. however I believe Ben does not know this fact or "when" they will end up. He just knows that when he gets back, he believes he can find Richard and resume his powerful reign when he gets there in 2007. Her stating at the Lamppost giving them a 3-day window was not their only chance to go back to the island... it was their only chance to get back to the island in the 1970's! In fact, the island is always accessible, it just moves in space and time. Any other window, would take them to other times that would accomplish nothing, and the bad thing coming will still be on it's way.
I strongly believe that not preventing Ben from becoming an Other IS the catastrophic consequence she was talking about... and right in front of Ben! It shocks, it gives you chills, and is so intense of a moment knowing that she is saying that, and Ben is being conned and doesn't even know it! She and the Others have conned him to believe that something ELSE bad is going to happen if they don't go back. After you read my theory, you see actually what Ben will be responsible for, and if it's my guess, it's human extinction.
Hawking knows that the 316's involvement with young Ben will prevent him from ever becoming an Other to begin with. He will end up on the island in 2007, will search out Richard alongside John Locke, and Richard as a complete shocker will not even KNOW who Benjamin Linus is (season 5 finale possibly?)!! And we get to see the look on poor Ben's face as he realizes he's just been conned!
Ben, your time is up! So this lead's my theory of why? This connects all the loose ends of who's on who's side. And the results of all of this, is my theory: If Ben Never Became an Other...
If Ben never became an other, the Hostiles never purge the DHARMA Initiative. This is because they lose their inside guy. There are many facts to support this, the main one being that the barracks in Namaste were obviously never inhabited by the Hostiles in this timeline. Everything that was DHARMA in Juliet and Ben's Baracks were gone in 2004 in all the season three shots we had of them. In the Namaste 2007 Barracks, there were still the DHARMA signs, logos, photos, everything... still there, weathered from time, abandoned, un-moved and covered in dust.
If Ben never became an Other, he would have never met Richard Alpert, and never mingled with the Hostiles to begin with. Perhaps Ben now meets his "hostile" in the form of Sayid, who is not an Other, and that preserves the memory of future Ben who meets a "long haired hostile" (remember?!!) but Sayid is just a proxy for Richard. Ben not meeting Richard, means Richard will not know him in the future when Ben thinks he's returning to the island in 2007 to resume leadership. To Ben's surprise, Richard and the Others will not know him! But ohhh yes, they will know John Locke!
If Ben never became an Other, the Hostiles and D.I. potentially never go to complete odds on their truce, it is possible that the D.I. finishes it's research and casually leaves. It's possible they even have the truce to begin with because the D.I. actually has a worthy cause! Which is to better humanity through science. If you read my theory and learn what the others really are there for, it makes sense why they'd allow the D.I. there, as long as they played nice. The Others really don't want to kill innocent people, only those who are threatening the world doing research with Nuclear weapons as in our military folk in the 50's. They had to go, because the Other's main goal and the main goal of the island is to protect HUMANITY, not just the island.
If Ben never became an Other, Ethan, Goodwin, and many of the Island's personally-chosen-by-Jacob protectors would still be alive today! Ben's actions of selfishness and jealousy in particular lead to Goodwin being killed by Anna Lucia. This is beneficial to the Others, as they are specially chosen by the Others as perfect candidates for their main goal which is... keep reading!
If Ben never became an Other, the rightful leader during the time of the Dharma Initiative (our very own Mr. Charles Widmore) would live out his days as the peaceful, non-manipulative protector of the island, and he will gracefully hand over the reigns to the next "chosen one" Mr John Locke, with no Ben in the middle. John Lock is the perfect spiritual leader for a new society of human beings... keep reading
If Ben never became an Other, he would have never met Jacob, and therefore not manipulated his way through the ranks of the Other's to become the leader. Jacob would still be in his orginal form/habitat/spaceship/cardboard box (use your imagination), there would be no volcanic ash around the cabin, and possibly no cabin! Jacob will no longer be needing to ask the next person who can hear him to "help me" Jacob being the spirit, or force of humanity, needs to be able to maintain his Island at all times, and choose who he believes is a perfect candidate for... almost there!
If Ben never became an Other, well, when it becomes time to repopulate the earth, it will happen as originally intended.
To me, I have always always ALWAYS believed that the island is the master reset switch for humanity for earth. I never shared this theory for lack of facts, from season 2 and 3, but as I watch the episodes of seasons 4 and 5, it's all coming together now! I believe that once things get so bad on Earth, people either get wiped out, kill each other off via nuclear war, epidemics, etc... These Others, this "pure society" of specially chosen human beings by some spirit/angel/god (we call him Jacob) and his get-it-done guy (Richard) who for all of eternity guard the last safe haven for spiritually enlightened, genetically superior, morally and ethically guided human beings... the Island. When Earth needs it, the island can go back in time, to any point, and start over providing the humans needed to re-populate as necessary. They are not super-human, they are normal ordinary humans, who age and die, which is why there always needs to be a constant influx of people through the ages! to be Others. They need a leader if they are called to action to create a new society, a man with faith and spiritual connections toward guiding them morally and ethically (A Moses type if you may), so their new society can be a spiritual one, which as we all know, spirituality is historically always the best choice for a morally guided society. This is why there are people like John Locke who are perfect candidates for this. This is why they HAVE TO HAVE KIDS as part of the society, because when repopulating, it has to be natural. The kids will not have much of a memory of the island, and as the adults die off, the island will become a distant memory. As to protect it's anonymity as the generations pass. Just like Atlantis, it will become Lost again. However Richard will still be there in the Temple with Jacob, recruiting Others still, incase the future needs it again.
If my theory is correct, Ben becomming an other taints this practice of guarding, protecting the Others, and repopulating Earth, and some chain of events will wipe humanity clean from existance (some war that's coming!) and there will be no backup plan, no master reset switch, nothing, because he ruined that too! Humans are doomed for extinction because Ben became an other, and this time around, with all the time travel, all the lying, manipulating, everything is designed to prevent that from happening. Anyone else think Christian is a former "Other?" and that's why he's helping John and seems to be also communicating somehow with Hawking and her crew? Everybody ties to Hawking in some way, who we all know is an Other, but Ben is always the odd man out. He thinks Hawking is there to help him, but she's maintaining the agenda of the Others, and Ben will be history. Because this time around, Ben never became an Other! Theory by matt
