Not a long theory but I wanted to get it posted before Namaste airs.
Dan is a ruined man, reeling from another wasted human life from his dabbling with time travel, living out of his own time. He is willing to sacrifice his own life in an incident called The Incident (imaginative eh?).
I am guessing, that he will be the first person from the DI to access the FDW chamber, we know that they are nearing it from the flashback at the start of the series. Once in there, or perhaps by merely entering it, he will either turn the wheel himself, or trying to be smart get a polar from Hydra to do it. The purpose of this, he has been studying for 3 years (perhaps with some help from Richard via Sawyer but I'm not 100% on this bit yet) is to send his friends and fellow Losties back to 2004/2007. Before this the hostiles/others used the smoke monster to move the wheel, and continually keep the island moving.
In doing so Daniel Faraday dies, but his spirit, mind, essence or something similar to whatever is in Desmond that can flash through time, gets caught on the island, by the look of it in a cabin built by Horace. He is now some sort of existential being, named Jacob (probably by Sawyer jokingly but it sticks).
Living in cabin by himself, refusing to embrace technology as he knows what harm it can do, he is able to control aspects of the island , its time and its powers, but only interferes when matters are of massive importance to maintain the time line, s he above all else knows the risk. But for instance when the time-line is changed he will advise what is best for the island.
Ok, so it's thin. But I'm posting it, to see if people can spot definite holes and prove me wrong, so maybe I can stop thinking about it. Comments welcome.Theory by CampbellLynn
