sorry if this has been said before but i haven't read anything saying that
so, after The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham, we we're left with the question "who's the good guy": Ben or Widmore. I think it's neither...sort of.
If you go back to Bentham's apartment, we get a lot of information pertaining to ben's plan.
He seems shocked when he learns Jin is alive. He seems surprised that Hawking is the key to get back to the island. Now, a few days after this, he meets Jack in the funeral home with Locke in the coffin and he tells Jack they all have to go back, but what happened to Ben to make him want Locke back if he had just murdered him days before. Here's what I think happened.
Ben Linus, who told Locke that he moved the island, actually turned the wheel to get off the island for one purpose: to see Widmore and kill Penny. But he couldn't find them so he just started killing WIdmore's associates. He had no idea how to get back to the island until Locke came. Locke went to speak to Jack and began to influence Jack into going back to the island. If locke convinces jack, everyone will go back...except SUn. When Ben learned of Jin's ring, he knew he had Sun. And when he learned of they way back to the island...he no longer needed John so he killed him. My guess is that Ben wanted to go back to the island so that he could rule without Locke being a problem anymore. Everything he said about WIdmore was true though. Anyways, after he killed Locke, ben went to see Eloise Hawking who told him that he needed to get Locke's body back along with everyone else. She didn't give a reason why she needed Locke's body, which drove Ben nuts.
In "Because you Left" Jack asks Ben "Is Locke dead?"
to which Ben doesn't respond...but that's only because he doesn't know himself...and not knowing everything drives Ben mad.
When Hawking speaks to Jack privately in the LAmpost, Ben keeps asking what it was that Hawking told him because he hates not knowing...or I think he's scared Locke will resurrect and well, it's not something Ben would hope for.
So, Ben is the good guy...for the most part...besides murdering John for his own selfish purposes. I think he wants to save the island from Widmore, who really is the bad guy. Theory by batmanman
