I love LostMommyof3's deductive reasoning. I would like to point out two things, though, one that supports the theory and one that doesn't. FIrst, ANOTHER reason Horace might have said 12 years is that Locke was traveling in time, or just that Locke was DREAMING and/or Horace's "ghost" could have built the cabin 12 years after the purge. But when that was doesn't have to be 1992; like the rest of us, Locke can dream of things from the past, too!
Second, however, is 1988. Frenchie says it's 1988, and she's almost certainly not lying. However, just because they took off in 1988 doesn't mean they shipwrecked in 1988. Time warp for them. (Same for flight 815.) Maybe they took off in 2004 (flight 815) and crashed in 2007, or 2009, or some other year. This would have made Ben's getting the Red Sox tape (for example) a lot easier. There are contradictions here (Alex's age, also the year that the 06 got off the Island) but they might be explained or at least explainable.
Bottom line, though, is that I won't make any assumptions over the actual year of the purge. Concluding 1992 from what Horace said in Locke's DREAM is WAY too much of a stretch.
And the whole Island wasn't necessarily gassed; it's a really big island. But I do think the purge could have happened pre-1988, no problem.
